Drinking vodka: is brand important..and other matters.

I buy Kamchatka vodka, because it is affordably priced, but not necessarily the 'cheapest'. I've always believed that "vodka is just vodka", and that there is no taste or quality difference. Is that true? I have never had vodka straight, have always mixed it, most often with club soda and a splash of lime juice.

Anybody drink vodka straight? Any recommended brands?

I'm pretty much a vodka only drinker (and not that often - mostly when cruising). I can take one shot straight, but that's about it. My preferred drinks are White Russians, Moscow Mules and vodka tonics.

Costco's Kirkland Signature Vodka is very good and not expensive. Some say it's sourced from Grey Goose, but that's not true. However, it frequently beats Grey Goose and Tito's in taste tests.

Luksusowa is a good Polish potato vodka. That's what I have in the cabinet right now.

Nathan, you'll have to conduct a taste test like you did for scotch. You'll find that vodkas vary in taste, just like any other liquor. They have distinct flavor profiles, and some are definitely smoother than others. I occasionally drink vodka neat but prefer it on the rocks, and I will sometimes add a twist of lemon or lime.

I'm fond of potato vodka. My go-to vodka is Luksusowa 😉. Chopin vodka is also made from potatoes and is smoother and more expensive. Belvedere vodka, made from Polish rye, has a smooth texture and a clean taste. Haku, a rice-based vodka, is also nice.

I don't like Tito's (made from corn). It tastes fine, but for some reason, every time I've had it, it gives me a headache. Go figure. 🤔

Love White Russians, if done right...a bit fattening. Moscow Mules- I've wanted to fix those, looks pretty easy.

When I was younger, brand mattered and that brand was considered a higher end label. Of course that was a long time ago. Towards the end of my drinking "career" I didn't give a crap about taste. I just reached down to whatever was on the bottom shelf because that is always where the cheapest bottle was ;)

I am no vodka snob but have had some vodka that is not good. Regular old Smirnoff is good enough for me and honestly I can't tell the difference in it and Grey Goose. 100 proof 1.75 litre runs about $30.00. I sometimes drink it neat but generally add water. I also keep mine in the freezer.
Smirnoff tastes like it was made in a bathtub. Foul, cheap stuff, always needed a mixer, couldn't stand it straight. Vodka was my hard liquor of choice. I also liked dark rum, though not as much. I better stop talking, I can see a liquor store right out my window and I will not be tempted!
