Copy Image & Paste in Chrome

You may find that many images posted after the migration download slowly, it's because when you do "Copy Image & Paste" in Chrome, Chrome actually copied the content of the image (not the file) and generated a new PNG file, PNG files are not meant for photos, they are very big with poor image quality.

So, when you attach a 100KB JPG file with "Copy Image & Paste" in Chrome, you actually uploaded a 500KB PNG file without your knowledge. Since I set a very big file size limit - 8MB to make sure all your uploads succeed, you won't get the file-too-large error, but it added unnecessary burden to our server without any extra benefits.

To prevent this we have banned PNG files. "Copy Image & Paste" in Chrome doesn't work here.

I noticed that just now!! It was working this morning, but not any more, so I'm having to upload rather than Copy and paste!! Shame because it's quicker and easier for us copying and pasting, but I understand totally your explanation.

I am using Edge. Just tried posting a meme image. It told me "Unable to post this extension" or something like that. I was able tpo post a couple personal pics from my camera, but not internet pics. What do I need to change??

Right click on internet pick and copy image address..

Thanks Matrix. My spelling isn't that bad, and I've never liked Grammarly, but thanks for trying. ..it's just my fingers type faster than my brain... 😄

I love Grammarly, Saves me a lot of time, and teaches me as I type, don't make the same mistake 100 times anymore... Glad it works here on the new board...

I think @Matrix said files ending in .png are disallowed.

So when you save a png to a jpg it is just an extension, or in fact, it saves it as a smaller file... My brain is wondering this early morning, late night?

If it's a photo, yes, much much smaller.

Take the picture in this thread as an example, it's a 70KB jpg file. If you download it and save it as PNG with an image software, it becomes 645KB, almost 10 times bigger.

I tried the "copy image address" thing, which I've been doing for a while now. All of a sudden, it doesn't seem to work for all pictures. Puzzling.

I tried "copy image address" and then clicked on the image icon, it popped up with a square saying "drop image here"
it wouldn't take the address, but caused my empty documents window to show up. I never keep any information at all on my computer, my husband uses that part, which is why I like to copy and paste without going through that.

I was able to just put the image address straight on the reply, but it didn't open into a picture unless clicked on.

The "oops" thing I usually get when trying to post a picture always say which formats can be used but I don't have any way I can see that tells me what that format is.

[Oh well, I appreciate everyone's advice. When you stop to think about it, maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Just imagine this forum sinking under the weight of all the dog pictures I would post if I could!] :D

I used the 1.2.3. and pasted your address https://www.loveyourdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Dachshunds-900x500.jpg.webp in the box that says http:// and look what happened ... whala!!

Another option I've been using in recent years is at this website:

https://postimages.org/

Most all websites with image attachment features tend to downsize via lossy compression, loaded images for small displays that I as a serious photographer do not like seeing even my downsized images mutilated so poorly. Websites need to do such because the majority of web users little understand image size bandwidth issues with many ignorantly uploading huge files right from their smartphones or cameras.

If one uses a web link, then one needs a hosting site or a personal web site. The free to use postimages.org site gets around the compressing loss issues, but images are deleted after selectable periods that is usually fine for my uses. So no, people cannot use the site for their personal online image storage site that some will otherwise greatly abuse. That is why Cloud file services arose.

When I search a free image to use in a post, I always add "pdf" to the search so I get an image I can share on SF.
I also found in my phone camera settings I was using HEIF under advanced picture options. I change it to JPEG when I want to be able to share that picture.
I'm getting better. I have spent many frustrating times trying to share things!

Home.jpeg I sent this pic of my home until I was 19 from my phone to my computer via email attachment. I hope this works, because my phone can't send pics to this forum. That's cool...lets see if this works. Great. That's the way I will share images here if they are on my phone.
