Just want to check in after lurking for about a week. Am wondering if there are any folks here in my situation. After living out of state since the mid 1980s, I moved back "home" after a divorce and retiring. I had the silly notion that I would have plenty of people with whom to socialize since I grew up here and many old classmates are still in the area. What I miscalculated was that the people I knew from the past would have space for me in their already full lives. My old classmates and work colleagues are friendly enough when we run into each other (which is actually fairly seldom), but our interactions do not extend beyond chance meetings.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to having some folks to chat with as it is extremely lonely after spending my whole career talking to people.

Hello, Marlene...Sorry you are lonely...I lived in Ohio for 2 years.....It wasn't pleasant...Anyway, my husband took a job there after he went with his company from NJ....I did have a very nice friend
who came to my home when we first bought the house....She was my only friend for 2 years....
I do miss her....We decided to go back to NJ...Ohio is not my cup of Tea.....I was young at the time
and missed my parents and family....(by the way, NJ isn't that good, either)…..It's changed over the
years...…………………...

I don't mind Ohio as it is my "home" state. I hate the cold, though, which is why I moved south for my career. I suppose the biggest problem, stated in today's popular lingo, I can't find my "tribe" here anymore.
I can certainly relate to your comment about things changing over the years. Oh my, how Ohio has changed.
Hi Marlene! I am in NE Ohio, have been here all my life..

Hi Ruthanne, I've had a bit of an interesting journey since I was born in southern KY way out in the mountains (where my mother was from) but moved to Ohio before I was one since this is where Dad was from. Then I moved to Florida and lived in Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Tallahassee (my favorite) and then to North Carolina (for my career). So I've been around a little.

I haven't spent much time in NE Ohio. How far up do you live?

Hi Marlene... from London, England

I live in the Cleveland area right on Lake Erie. I'd say it's the coldest part of the state.

Oh, now don't you know . . .England is on my Bucket List. I have a great pen pal from Staffordshire area (close to Endon). I've been enamored by England ever since I was a little girl and read all of Agatha Christie's books. . .I'm hoping England will be in my summer travels this coming year.

Oh, I have been to Cleveland. When I was doing research for my dissertation, I visited a dance group in Cleveland (my dissertation was on old-time dance communities and there is quite a nice group in Cleveland).

Oh yes, I see your weather reports, and they make me shiver!!

Yes I've read all of Christies' books too..Poirot, Miss Marple, Tommy & Tuppence ( sounds like janet & john doesn't it)?:D ..all of them ... . I've recently retirred and I worked with a woman who was from Staffordshire

Hi @Marlene - Welcome! I lived in Gainesville for maybe a month, pretty town, but I then moved to North Palm Beach for a while. Florida was too humid and too ''hurricaney'' for me, so came to Arizona.

Welcome. After retirement I moved back to the area where I was born and raised. You can go home again, just be prepared to accommodate all the changes.

ah, so true, Nautilus, so true. I actually knew that before I came back here in terms of knowing that nothing would be the same (as I still have a tiny bit of family here and had visited regularly). So my expectation was that I would come back, some of my old acquaintances might have time for coffee and a chit chat once in awhile, and I would be able to make new friends. So far it hasn't worked out that way. And, so Robert Burns was correct, I fear.

“The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
Gang aft agley.
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

~Robert Burns

Now you have just made my morning. . .how exciting in a real life small world kind of way. Years ago, I read her Autobiography (which apparently was a collection of her recollections that was published posthumously. I was fascinated. I'll be so excited to hear about your life in London. :giggle:

Hi Llynn, I was prepared for the physical changes since I've visited the very few family members I have left in the area every few years. The changes I neglected to take into account was the change that comes with aging when everyone who has been here all along already has a full life and typically are not looking for new friends. But, I've never been one to sit at home. I'm pretty active and do lots of things - but do it all alone. Ah well, I'm an optimist. I am in a book club. I attend concerts on a regular basis, and I teach classes at the local senior center (The sociology of aging; the sociology of emotions; and a flatfooting class (an appalachian form of dance very akin to clogging).
