What was your first car?

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
This is a repeat of an old thread. But, we have a bunch of new members who might want to contribute. Here's mine, a '48 Plymouth that I paid $200 for in 1957. The white walls are fake add-ons.

I was a late driver. In l982, I took a driving course at Young Driver's ... yep, I was the only adult there - and pregnant to boot. My very first car was bought from cashing in a life insurance policy I had since I was in my mid-20's. It was a Honda hatchback that stalled every time it rained. One time, I was on the highway in rain, and had to pull over on the shoulder of the road to open the hood. For some reason, that worked, except when I was in a huge snowstorm not far from home (thank goodness).

My first two vehicles were motorcycles
My first car was a Chrysler my parents sold me which was a piece of junk. After putting $700 into it I could no longer afford it so scrapped it. My next two vehicles were vans my husband wanted me to buy. They were large enough for hauling things and big enough for the German shepherds. Now I have a small sport car 🚗 with standard transmission. It had low profile tires and l love ❤ it. 💕

A used plain jane 1970 Ford Torino similar to this one.

I purchased it in 1975 for $500.00 and just about everything that could go wrong with a car did go wrong. It also seemed that just about everything that went wrong cost between $150.00 and $200.00 to fix which was the best part of two weeks take-home pay at the time.

Here is my wife's first car, a '53 Chevy Bel air. Her Dad bought it for her in '58. I don't know what he paid for it. After 3 wrecks that weren't her fault, he made her trade it in for a '58 Chevy that she still had when we got married.

Here is a photo from the web of my second car, a Renault Dauphine. It's the worst car I've ever owned. I paid $1000 for it and sold it for $50 to a mechanic for parts.

1953 Ford Crown Victoria hardtop. Flathead V8 with 3 on the tree. had more fun in that car than a teenage boy should have been allowed.

Next was a 1958 Chevy Impala with a 348 V8 and factory tri power. It sucked gas like a drain pipe but when you got all three carbs opened up, it screamed.

Mine was a pathetic 51 Chevy that I paid $50.00 for. The "slipautomatic" transmission worked in the forward direction, but if you wanted to back up everybody put a foot out the door and assisted what lame power that transmission was able to direct to the rear wheels. (Never park on a hill.)
About six months after I bought it, the head cracked and I was down to four cylinders. My gas mileage was terrible.
And I got 18 months out of that car before selling to a junk yard for $50.

'54 Chevy, 2-dr post
pristine
in line six
3 on the tree

Bought it for $300 at 15
chevy 2.jpg

Promptly drove it to the ground
But only after side swiping an oncoming car full of old people with their mouths open, while I made out with my girlfriend

Then the '62 Impala super sport
283 V8
62 ss fin.jpg

Attracted the ladies....and the red paint attracted the cops

Took a little longer to drive it to the ground.....but I did

My buddy had a white 63 Impala super sport - Very nice car.

'62 Mercury Comet, $100. Bought in 1972, Champaign, IL. I drove that great, little car back and forth to Chicago, had lots of fun in it. It gave up the ghost, and the transmission I put in it, in 1974. I watched a Mafia tow truck haul it away, as I was in a phone booth, in Oak Park, trying to get help.

'55 Dodge Station wagon, red, with a huuuuuge engine. Every time I stomped on the gas pedal, you could almost see the gas gauge go down, and down, and down. Luckily, gas was 25 cents a gallon and if everyone pitched in a quarter, we could cruise all night. The odometer was broken, so my dad never knew how far I drove it, thankfully. He would not have been happy with me. He also couldn't figure out why it was out of alignment all the time. That was because I liked to hit this steep little bridge that went over the railroad tracks very fast and get airborne. My guardian angel must have been white-haired (or hairless) by the time I went off to college without the car, because it was a one-lane bridge and you couldn't see if anyone was coming. It was purely a miracle I didn't die and take everyone else with me. Youth is truly wasted on the young......

It wasn't exactly a high school senior's "dream car" in 1965 (although the boys did like to look at the engine), but I was grateful that my dad coughed up the $100 for it.

It looked like this but it was red:

'41 Mercury Club Coupe, bought in 1951. Can't remember what I paid but it wasn't much, even back then. Good little car and I replaced it with a '50 Merc 2-door, in 1956, just before getting married. That car's long gone but the wife's still with me.:)

My first car was a new 1969 Austin America - a real piece of junk. It constantly overheated & the reverse went out at 10,000 miles. We sued British Leland Motors & the judge made them buy it back & refund me the whole price - $1800.00.

My first car was a 1968 Chevy Corvair, the car demonized to extinction in Ralph Nader's work, "Unsafe at Any Speed." I bought the car for a thousand dollars made through summer jobs. Called "the American VW," the car had its air-cooled engine in the rear, and handled strangely under hard cornering. The bad press given the car caused my mother to hound me to get rid of it, which I did under relentless pressure after only a year...but dang, I loved the little death trap! Mine was yellow like this, but I put a red racing stripe on it and lots of wax...
