I found another "shortage"

With this "social distancing", I thought about buying some Webcams, and putting one on my computer, and giving the kids/grandkids each one, so as to have a better way of communicating....rather than just phone calls and e-mails. I checked the store web sites at Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, etc., and they are all sold out of those costing $100, or less. The items that they still have are quite high in price....some well over $1000.

I guess all this "work from home" transition, in recent weeks, has gutted the supply of these. About the only store that seems to be able to get these at a reasonable price is Walmart....but they don't have any in stock, either.

I had the same thought, so I ordered one on Ebay. It was just $16 with free shipping and the dealer is only about 30 miles from me. It's been over a week and the post office tracking page says they haven't received it yet. So, I sent a message to the dealer to ask what's up. He was very apologetic and said he would investigate. I don't know whether to blame him or the postal service. At any rate, if it doesn't come soon, I'll get my money back. That's one good thing about Ebay.

I could also just buy a tablet with a camera, but that would probably run a $100 or so. And, I have no other use for a tablet.

A couple of things to consider about Amazon: Some of the dealers on Amazon are actually in China, and I don't believe it's obvious which ones. Shipments from China right now could be very slow. I've waited over a month for my last order of tea and there is still no sign of it.

The other thing is that Amazon has announced that they are giving priority to essential items and other purchases may be delayed. I've read that they are actually discouraging sales.

I ordered items from Amazon nothing essential, ordered Monday and delivered Thursday.

Almost every computing device sold in the past 5 years or more has a built-in webcam. I don't understand why there'd be a run on them, but not something I have any interest in. I put masking tape over the built-in cameras because I'm paranoid. 😱

That's true if you have a tablet or a notebook. I have a desk top and a full size monitor that didn't come with one. Maybe instead of a run on them, they don't keep many in stock because there is not much call for them. I wouldn't have any use for one if it weren't for this isolation. I will just unplug mine when not in use.

My understanding of the notebook cameras is that there is a warning light when they are active. But, I read that hackers can get around that by disabling the light.

Our desktop computer (Dell; 3 or 4 years old) came with a camera. I always disable cameras, microphones, etc. on any technology. You won't find "Alexa" in this house now or ever, and it even bugs me that the Xfinity remote is voice activated... but at least you have to press the button for that. :D

What tea do you buy from China, if you don’t mind me asking?

Hmmm - had to remember where this thread started.... okay - there is a shortage of yeast. And, also, I cover the camera on my laptop with creatively folded cardboard. Long ago, a friend sent me an email and told me to click on something he sent: "it's funny, trust me!" - It was something about a 'cupholder.' The disk drive popped open and scared me to death. So, no - I'm not very trusting anymore!

Another shortage coming to grocery stores across the country .... frozen pizza
Probably many more things about to disappear for now
why would there be a shortage of frozen pizza.., any particular reson for that Bonnie?...we have loads here... it's one of the few things that aren't in shortage here ... but still loads of things seriously rationed here to just 2 or items per person

Yes, I will probably go with EBAY....been buying stuff there for 20 years. We're supposed to have some rainy weather this week, so that will give me plenty of time to do some research. I would like to see one in a store, so I can figure out the best way to mount it, but that shouldn't be any big deal. Plus, with EBAY I can select US Sellers only, and that will shorten the delivery time by a bunch.

:)Comfort food I guess, @hollydolly

Although most reported shortages of supplies during the coronavirus pandemic have pointed to empty shelves formerly filled with toilet paper and a lack of hand sanitizer, there’s one coveted essential item that’s also been flying out of stores at an unprecedented rate: frozen pizza.

Panicked shoppers have not only been stocking up on canned tuna, they’ve also been tossing large piles of boxed pizza into their freezers, operating under the assumption that frozen pizza can hardly go bad. Plus, pizza is undeniably peak comfort food, so while it should come as no surprise that you can still find fresh produce in the grocery store, frozen pizza is a much rarer find.

A black tea drinker from China and India from an importer. Check out your source on black teas. Thanks.

These are odd times for fast shipping from China. I buy the black teas from an importer. Yunnan from China and Assam from India.
Gvoing to look at your source. I've bought both direct and from importers. Thanks.

When you go to eBay just click on a product and it will tell you where it is being shipped from. Because I've had bad luck with things shipped from China and Hong Kong I don't buy things from there anymore on eBay.

It's Amazon that doesn't tell where things are shipped from.

Funny but I was thinking of getting a webcam, too. I'm not sure how to hook it up, though, and often these new computer and tv accessories don't come with directions.

It's hard to tell from one week to the next where there's going to be a shortage. I'm getting a delivery tomorrow and hope it's better than the last one from that company but not going to hold my breath.
