What's your favorite musical instrument?

All of them! I listen to a lot of music and in every song there's an instrument (or two) that stands out. Sometimes it's the sax, sometimes the piano, sometimes the organ, sometimes the bass (electric and upright) and sometimes the guitar (I particularly love the "screaming" lead guitar parts). In fact I have a playlist called Guitar Gasms. In one of my favorite songs, the flutes are spectacular. In another, the strings are magnificent. How different instruments and their arrangements (and performers) can make music sound so good always amazes me (even though I make music).

For singing accompaniment, I prefer piano or acoustic guitar. For a single instrument .... saxophone .
Why? Because I love to sing. I know how to play piano a bit but not guitar. I think guitar is the most versatile instrument ever.
Saxophone I love because it’s so versatile also. It’s played in many different types of genres of music.
I’ve got a 65 year old alto and an 8 year old soprano.

Guitar... Me and my cousin learned to play from my Uncle Nick....We played together until we went to High School...
Never touched the Guitar again....My Dad started playing and took over the Guitar....I never knew what happened to that guitar...

You never considered buying your own guitar when you got older?

No....I had enough playing the guitar....We only played for family...I wish I could play it now...But my hands wouldn't be able to play...
It's hard work playing...not at my young age, but at my age now....It's rough on the hands....
I’m sorry you can’t play any more due to your age.

It IS hard work; having to build up calluses just to be able to play. It’s VERY rough on the fingers and the fact that one has to have short nails turned me off some. Yes it’s a vain excuse but I love long nails.

Sadly playing the piano properly needs short nails also but I could get away with it easier. I did buy my husband a guitar though which he sometimes plays. Guitar truly is beautiful.
Now I wish I can have that Guitar my Dad gave away....It's been a long time....I'll tell you, when me and my cousin started playing, the first
song was Bimbo Bimbo whatcha gonna doeo… I don't know if we made that up or it was really a song....It's been a long time for me to remember....

Cello. I want to learn to play "Into the West" from Lord of the Rings on the cello

Count me as a cello lover as well. I especially like to hear a cello in "rock" music. One example is the version of Dumb by Nirvana from the MTV Unplugged album.

I once went to a show by a small rather unknown band called The Slow Poisoner at a club in San Francisco where they had two cellists playing. Their old cellist was moving to the Los Angeles area and they had both her and her replacement playing at the show that night. It was a magical evening.

My favorite song for the last decade has been "Gabriela's Oboe." The sound is simply stunning.

But you don't find that instrument played that often, probably because it is so hard to play.

My second choice would be the violin when it is played by a real master.

My third choice would be the guitar, and I have reserved a berth next to Santana, Eric Clapton, or BB King when I get to heaven.
