Vintage Cigarette Commercials

Now here's an ad (cigarette related) that's sure to raise the ire in a few!

Putting Out the Past: Laughable Vintage Cigarette Ads -

The first thought that came to my mind when I saw this post was that it reminds me of how the wearing of masks and other pronouncements surrounding COVID-19 are being handled today. In other words, some things never change. :)

My dad called these 'coffin nails.'

I saw him with an Old Gold catalog; the company was giving gifts to those customers who saved coupons on the cigarette pack. I asked "What are you getting?" and he said "A Coffin."

He had a sardonic humor about cigarettes.

In the church I grew up in, it was considered a sin to smoke. A person could not officially join the church, become an elder or a deacon if they smoked. Same with drinking. Of course it was also a sin to wear lipstick....

My goodness, thank the heavens above for progressive change.

My mom smoked Camels and Kools two of the top killers. I believe she thought it made her look sophisticated until she had what her doctor said was the worst heart attack he had ever seen.

That's really sad. Is she still with you or did it take her out? Sometimes we all do things that are contrary to our good health. It's a matter of "name your poison." For me that poison is sugar in any form - that includes fruit and high sugar vegetables. I'm not diabetic, but the opposite.

I remember in college in the mid 1960's, it was very "sophisticated" to smoke. Really "with it". We girls would sit on the steps of the dorm with cigarettes displayed oh-so-casually and wait for guys to light them for us. Of course, most of us (me included) never actually smoked them. We just sat around, trying to look cosmopolitan, flicking off the ashes and occasionally taking little "mouth puffs" to keep them lit. I tried inhaling once and about coughed up a lung. Back to mouth-puffs for me.
