Homemade clothing of the past...

Simplicity was what my mom used. I remember all those evenings standing there having her pin a hem. What a drag! She made me a dress for a choir concert and one of the boys behind me stuck his gum in the zipper. She was so mad cuz she had to end up cutting me out of it. LOL

A lot of work went into turning-out a pair of pants or an outfit from a pattern, not to mention the cost of the fabric.

My mom made all of our Halloween costumes from scratch as well.

I still remember the humming sound of her first electric sewing machine. She spent a lot of time in front of it with all of us kids.

Even though my mother was an excellent seamstress, she did not sew that much for us. I remember when I was in the 6th grade and she made me a baby blue (wool) jumper to wear for a Christmas pageant. I loved that jumper. And another time, she made me a 'tent dress' , I think that is what it was called. She made our costumes and our dresses for special occasions.

Yes, "tent dresses" is exactly what they were called.

My mom made a lot of our clothes but as teens we made them ourselves.A-line skirts were so easy.

My mom made all the bridesmaids dresses for my two older sisters weddings, and made my one sister`s wedding dress as well. She also made most of our prom and special dance dresses. She worked full time as well. She was amazing!

I love sewing but nowadays it is often cheaper to buy a garment and embellish it yourself
I still darn and mend on the machine and by hand and last Winter I made a long dressing gown for myself
The last thing I made was a blockout curtain for one very 'hot' window from a 3 bay window in our dining room
As the Sun is setting this one window would be so bright and hot hence the blockout curtain....solved the problem 😊

I still like to sew when I feel like it on my 21 year old sewing/ embroidery machine.

I made some clothing for my children / grandchildren when they were young but it’s rare for me to make anything now days ,I buy skirts for dancing and take them up from the waist so I don’t spoil the hemline.
I made 100+ masks for family and friends so it’s times like this I’m glad I learned to sew when I was14

I can't sew for crap and the quality of thread has gone so far downhill it's ridiculous.
Marci, the thread by Guterrman today is made in two different countries. If you look at the tag the original thread from Germany is still quality and the stuff from Mexico is coarse and thick and will not work in my machine.

I still sew a lot today, a great hobby.
