How can I get rid of mice in the house without
using traps?

Any ides will be studied gratefully.

Mike.

How did they get in, Mike?

First and most important thing to establish, is where, or how did they get in, no sense trying to rid your home of mice if there's a way they're gaining access to the inside of your home.

Lots of friendly, no-kill mouse traps today.

Depending on where you live, mice are a constant potential problem.
If you live around here, I don't care what kind of house you have, you will get mice.
They usually try to find a warm place for the winter between Oct -December.
they can fit into a crack as thin as a pencil.
I have traps set all year round.
They don't need much water and can live on eating paper.
I would use Irish spring inside my hot rod when I would store it for the winter. Dryer sheets too.
Problem with a house is that you would have to have Irish spring everywhere.
I don't use poison because my dog could eat it or the mouse after they ate poison. They act drunk before they die.
They are vile, carry disease, fleas, etc.
I personally use kill traps but if you want live traps you can buy them I am sure.
The other problem is that it is illegal to relocate mice, chipmunks, rodents, etc. around here.
You have no choice really.
Good luck.

I have a metal box that captures them after you put a treat in the one compartment. I haven't had to use it in years but when I did I caught a few and took them somewhere else (the woods) and released them. They were overjoyed when released.

there are many suggestions Irish spring is one i heard as well if you know where they hang out and do not have a cat or dog cayenne pepper repels them .... they also have those plug in devices that make some high pitch noise or something to annoy them .

My favorite trap is the electric one. It's called "the rat Zapper".
Clean and efficient. Red light come on to tell you there is an electrocuted victim inside.
Just dump it out.

I have never had any reasonable degree of success getting rid of mice without using kill traps (snap type traps). Just about every year I have a couple or so of mice get in when it starts to turn nippy in the autumn. I can't use poison because of dogs, and the snap traps (using peanut butter) takes care of them. Nothing else I've tried has really worked.

Get a couple of cats?
These young Generation Alpha cats just aren't as effective as the cats from previous generations.

Where I live Aunt Marg is a terrace and others have mice,
I can't find where they are getting into my place though
and I suspect that it is behind the heating boiler, which is
on the floor.

Some say that peppermint oil stops them from entering,
others mention Eucalyptus oil, many prefer white vinegar.

I might get an endoscope camera to check for any holes
behind the boiler, or just pour some concrete and hope for
the best, if I find the entrance, I can stuff it with steel wool.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Mike.

We had mice when we first bought the house (we live in the woods). I had an exterminator come out. He plugged all the holes where they could get in and put down traps. I still had mice. I had a follow-up appointment with the exterminator three months later but another guy came out. This guy told me to never leave ANY water out-- empty dog bowls, dry the sinks, tub, etc. after every use. They do not need much water but they do need some. Anyway, that worked. I have not had mice in years.

Oh brother, I had so many mice in my old house that I felt like they were tormenting me. I had 3 cats and they were really good hunters.... outside! Inside the mice had too many things to hide in or behind so the cats could not get them. Some years, I'd get rid of them for awhile, but then a new family would move in. I would not recommend have a heart traps and relocating them. They carry diseases and when they get into your house you do not know where they have been. I had to clean off my kitchen counter every night and put a trap right on my stove (my food preparation areas!) and some nights we would get 2 or more. One period we got 17, I am not kidding, 17 in a couple of weeks in my pantry. I could tell stories. Peppermint is recommended but never worked for me. Wood traps did. I had to move to get away from them.

Go to your local hardware store and see if they have those catch and release traps.

I went to look for one of those and the guy informed me if you drop them in a bucket of water they'll drown. I was mortified. I told him I just want to catch it not kill it.

I second your concrete plug option if you find a hole, Mike.

No sense messing around, fill-in any holes you find permanently. Not only will a proper concrete plug keep the mice out, it will keep other creepy-crawlers out as well.

Unfortunate Aunt Marg they can eat their way through
concrete unless you lace it with broken glass or wire/steel
wool.

Still I need to find the hole first.

It's almost impossible to seal up a house to keep mice out unless you make it air tight.
There will always be crack somewhere. Wall, foundation, window well, etc.
They can squeeze into a crack as small as the width of a pencil.
Around here mice a part of the eco system. I live near farm land and next to a forest preserve.
There are birds of prey, coyotes, foxes, snakes, etc. that all live on eating small rodents.
We have mice, field mice, voles. ground squirrels, rabbits, cats, small dogs, that all part of the food chain for those predictors.
One acre of farm land can support 5000 voles.
If a mouse wants to get in your house, they will.
Traps are the only things that work.
When I stored my hot rods, I had all the anti-mouse stuff I could use because they will destroy the interior of a car so fast.
Irish spring, etc., in a house will just make them go to another part of the house.

Some cats, and dogs are good mousers; some will just watch the mice and give you a "so what?" look.
Plug the holes, throw some Decon or other poison in places that pets and children can't reach; I prefer multiple traps, including the sticky kind.

Enjoy!

The exterminators had the catch and release box that I got.

Get a Rat Terrier...I heard they are better than cats but I don't know for sure.
