Devoting a year to learn Spanish

Google can translate your real time conversation into over 100 different languages.

I haven’t used them but it seems like they would be helpful.

Once again, I, too, am trying to learn Spanish. There's a few channels on youtube I'm utilizing. Some are better than others

A good couple of years ago, long before the internet, I was trying to teach myself Spanish, and I'd go to the library and check out books for early readers in Spanish. Comic books helped a lot.

Now that I'm at it again, I'll have to give that a try...

tia, for any and all suggestions

The way our population is changing, Spanish may almost become the primary language in a few decades.

I learned to speak German when I was stationed in Germany back in the early '60's....took a few classes on base, and mingled with a lot of the locals, and picked it up within a few months. They thought I had a strange "accent" and often mistook me for being French.

The best way to learn another language is to move to a country that speaks this language. If you want to learn Spanish move to a Latin American country, like Mexico, and live with or hang around with Mexicans. Don't spend too much time with the expats since they all speak English and I guess you don't more English. Learning from a book or course is tough because you are in an isolated situation. In Mexico you will use the language all day and learn very quickly. Buena suerte, amigo!

Our son went to Costa Rica as an exchange student from FSU. He lived with a family that spoke no English. He learned fast.

Back in the 1980s I had a job that involved a lot of travel. I bought a set of Spanish lessons on cassette tapes. I could play them in the car or if I was flying on a Walkman player. I did not become fluent, but I could get something to eat, a tank of gas and a cerveza.

Good luck to you, @Mr. Ed . I'm still struggling with it. o_O I think my problem is that I was taught to speak Tex-Mex and it is not the proper language. Sad.

I have an on-line friend from Australia who moved to California a couple of years ago; well, she is taking Spanish classes and finds them very difficult.

Actually I spent some time working on Chinese. The common language, not the characters, seems to be much simpler than Latin variants.
I just meant: After the next World War, I believe Americans will all be speaking Chinese.
I know this is an odd question. Do you believe in past lives?
I looked at your picture and all I saw was a Chinese man.

Oh, Don't pay any attention. I'm a strange woman.

I absolutely believe in repeated trips to this land of fae, in whatever form, or formless.

I might be glowing a bit like a monk these days.

But yes, China has been waging a long term bulletless war, and they are mostly winning.

I am still concentrating on English

The baby is fast asleep
I can run fast
The window is closed fast
He is a fast friend

Awesome for you! I have always regretted not listening to my grandma who said to take Spanish when I was in school and instead I took French. No disrespect to the French people or their language, but Spanish would have served me much better where I live.

I think it's so wonderful that, no matter our age, we keep learning!
I applaud you who are learning a new language!
My hope is we won't all be learning Chinese.
Ha! In the big city near me there are Chinese signs all over and I'm not talking about some China Town. I'm afraid that Chinese will be one of the 3 "official" language of my country very soon if the trend I'm seeing will continue. Enough said!
