I just cried when I saw this on the news, which happened Friday in New Mexico. Is it not bad enough that people throw animals away like garbage but to do that to a live baby. I wonder what that young mum was thinking, what drove her to make that decision? Maybe there are no safe places to drop a baby no questions asked in NM. After she drove away others were seen driving up to the dumpster and going through the garbage. Thankfully they found the baby, police and ambulance arrived. Maybe those people were her family, I guess we'll know in time.

Very tragic. I have always been told that babies could be left at fire stations. Clearly she didn't know that. I'm sure it must be quite traumatic for a teenager to become pregnant and have a baby, and their proper judgement hasn't even developed, but who values human life that little?

In my 20's I had the unfortunate experience to meet one such newborn.
I was driving a taxi. I stopped in a gas station restroom. It was really a mess. I thought; "Good thing I don't need to sit on the toilet because it was really dirty - and bloody, too.
I saw what I thought was a rubber ball in the toilet. It was the top of a baby's head. A woman gave birth & tried to flush the baby down but it got stuck. I told an employee who called police. I called it a night, brought the cab in & went home.
I was reminded of Neil Young's song: "Rockin' in the Free World" which includes the lyrics:
I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
There's an old street light
Near a garbage can
And now she put the kid away and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life and what she's done to it
There's one more kid that'll never go to school
Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool

Alexis Avila was arrested and charged with attempted murder and child abuse after her infant son was found clinging to life on Friday night in 30-degree weather, nearly six hours after being tossed in the trash.
Avila was released from jail after posting $10,000 unsecured bond less than two hours after her arrest. She will be arraigned at a later time at Lea County District Court.
August Fons, the acting chief of Hobbs police department, said he had never before come across a case like this.

Thank goodness from a criminal perspective she was STUPID enough to think she would get away with it by throwing it in the trash with video cameras everywhere instead of being clever about it. Also the bag had to have been unsealed for air to get in or the baby would have suffocated, another thank goodness she was stupid!

apparently the bag was sealed, but I suppose as a tiny baby there was enough air in there for the baby to survive for 6 hours..albeit he's clinging to life.....also my concern to was how easily the baby could have landed on something hard or sharp, and had been killed by that. I'm presuming he landed on something fairly soft to have survived.. altho' she obviously didn't care, she didn't even look at what was in the dumpster.. she just tossed him in like any old bag of garbage as casually as could be...Thank goodness from a criminal perspective she was STUPID enough to think she would get away with it by throwing it in the trash with video cameras everywhere instead of being clever about it. Reminds me of a woman who had 3 kids & wanted to date a co-worker, but he said he didn't want a woman with kids. So she tried to kill all of her kids by shooting them. Her 3 year old was permanently paralyzed & her 7 year old daughter died.

Unfortunately one of my nightmare calls. Poor girl only survived a few days. Was infuriating to see the same woman pregnant again a few years later...

Well if anyone has the stomach for it they can watch it, for myself it was disturbing enough when my daughter told me about last night.
BTW, New Mexico has 'Safe Haven' laws for surrendering infants up to 90 days old with no legal consequences tho you may at some point need to sign paperwork relinquishing parental rights. Hospitals, Police and Fire Stations are all 'Safe Haven' locations where one may do this.
While in my mind and heart nothing excuses the action of this woman, if she is a teen and the mother--family consequences might have been what she was trying to avoid--tho how'd they miss the pregnancy???
This is why some people here are trying to expand NM's Safe Haven laws to ways it can be done anonymously. Both the Mayor and Fire Chief of Espanola have been lobbying for the expansion for a while now and this incident apparently has motivated them to try again with the State Legislature.
