FDA warns about Family Dollar stores

I know a lot of people shop at Family Dollar and thought this warning from the FDA sounded important. One of their distribution centers was found to have dead rats, live rats, dead and alive birds, etc. which compromised a lot of different products. I copied a few snippits to put here, but if you want to read the whole bulletin I included a couple links.

ISSUE:
The FDA is alerting the public that several categories of FDA-regulated products purchased from Jan. 1, 2021, through the present from Family Dollar stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee may be unsafe for consumers to use.

The impacted products originated from the company’s distribution facility in West Memphis, Arkansas, where an FDA inspection found insanitary conditions, including a rodent infestation, that could cause many of the products to become contaminated. Conditions observed during the FDA’s inspection included live rodents, dead rodents in various states of decay, rodent feces and urine, evidence of gnawing, nesting and rodent odors throughout the facility, dead birds and bird droppings, and products stored in conditions that did not protect against contamination. Rodent contamination may cause Salmonella and infectious diseases, which may pose the greatest risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and immunocompromised people.

Some examples of these products include:

  • human foods (including dietary supplements (vitamin, herbal and mineral supplements))
  • cosmetics (skincare products, baby oils, lipsticks, shampoos, baby wipes), animal foods (kibble, pet treats, wild bird seed)
  • medical devices (feminine hygiene products, surgical masks, contact lens cleaning solutions, bandages, nasal care products) and
  • over-the-counter (OTC) medications (pain medications, eye drops, dental products, antacids, other medications for both adults and children).

I have no idea what China smells like but it can't be any worse than the unpleasant subtext of the statement: "I stay away because they smell so bad. Kind of a chemical thing plus the smell of China. It's overwhelming for me."

I've never been in a Family Dollar store.
I don't know for sure so don't quote me on that but I think it has to do with the kind of packaging and plastic wrapping that they use. It's like how you can tell high quality plastic from cheap plastic by its smell.

Family Dollar stores I've found to be the dirtiest of all the boxes. They are frequently under staffed, stocked and poorly supplied period. At the very beginning of the virus they were already short staffed and couldn't even give change which they had already experienced occasional issues. It's like the staff are treated as contractors and the stores franchises-there's minimal oversight.

I was skeptical when I saw all of this smell of China discussion, then I Googled "Made in China smell" and got lots of hits. It does seem to be a real thing, here is one explanation, close to what @RFW said:
Why Do These Chinese Products Smell So Weird? https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2013/04/ask-lh-why-do-chinese-products-smell-so-weird/

Probably for the best.

Yep, I think that's the worst of it. Even still it takes a few days for the product to air out!

There must be something in the soil of Northeastern Pennsylvania, because "Dollar" stores take root everywhere. We have wooded tails in the wild forest, known only to deer, and there are three Dollar stores on it. I know they all have "Dollar" in their names, but I can never keep which chain is which chain. I've always been a little hesitant about buying food in them. But the other stuff is in packages.

Why is anyone surprised? Almost everything in the Dollar Store and most other stores like Wally Mart comes from China? You didn't know this?

All those items would be in sealed packages.

I don’t buy food at dollar stores.
I buy fruit there sometimes, if it's something I can't find at the grocery store. I always wash produce before I eat it anyway.

But I never buy OTC drugs from there, or any other food. I used to take the g-kids there every weekend to buy a toy or coloring book or whatever, but they're over it.

Hope Dollar General and Dollar Tree aren't as bad! Those are the ones I shop. We have Family Dollar here as well but it's been years since I've been in one.
