A gunman wearing a gas mask and orange construction vest is on the run after shooting at least eight people on a packed subway train in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, as it inched towards the 36th Street station during rush hour on Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 8.30am, the gunman - described by witnesses as a 5ft 5 black man, weighing 170lbs, wearing an orange construction vest and gas mask, is believed to have let off a smoke grenade on a northbound N train as it moved towards 36th Street in Brooklyn.

Witnesses from the train car say they thought fireworks were being let off before they realized someone was in fact shooting at passengers in one end of the car.

Eight people were shot including one who is now in a serious condition but fire department sources say 13 in total were injured; four suffered smoke inhalation and the 13th injured is a pregnant woman. None are thought to have life-threatening injuries.

The terrified passengers were then trapped on the moving train until it 36th Street. Video shows them spilling out onto the platform as soon as the doors opened, coughing as smoke billowed out from the subway car.

Some passengers carried wounded victims off the train and lay them on the platform to render aid until help came. Others, fearing for their life, ran away in tears.

Multiple smoke bombs were found at the 36th Street station, according to the FDNY.

The gunman remains at large nearly three hours after the shooting. NYPD units are scouring the city's empty subway tunnels to find him and an amber alert has been issued.

Schools surrounding the subway station were ordered to shelter in place and an amber alert was issued throughout much of the city.

I am not surprised at this at all. It's an on going and never ending story in the US. Why am I not surprised. A few days ago I tried to watch some movies. First there was a TV western (Season 1) show called, "Dead Men." It was awful! In the first 60 seconds, 2 men were shot for no reason at all; the 2nd men was shot in the back as he tried to run away. Lots of swearing too. After 2 minutes I just shut off this film. Life is too short to watch such garbage. There is so much violence in a lot of Hollywood movies these days that I'm not surprised that people with mental problems get "wonderful" copy-cat ideas what to do in their spare time.

Small wonder I watch DVDs from the 50s and 60s. At least those shows (Gunsmoke, etc.) had a story and the acting was great.

Early reports had the suspect wearing a NY Transit police uniform. Other's said construction worker now it's was a wearing a safety vest.

What were the smoke bombs about. I guess it worked helping his get away. If this wasn't terror it's like he had a specific target.

Too close for comfort. I was on the subway in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens last Saturday. On one train, in my car, there was a panhandler. A few people dropped coins in his cup. He stopped near me and counted his additional fortune and then got off at the next stop. I like NYC but a few days are enough for me.

It's almost gotten to the point...What can you say!!🤔
Until, there's more justice...those that need to be punished..are..
Instead of becoming repeat offenders...
It is gonna get worse!

If you want to know more about American Gun Culture but were afraid to ask, just read the following article.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41488081
Great article!

Excerpt:

"Figures from the CDC show there were a total of more than 45,000 gun deaths in 2020 - of which more than 24,200 were suicides.

Though mass shootings generally receive more media attention, the majority of gun-related deaths in the United States occur from suicide.

A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found there was a strong relationship between higher levels of gun ownership in a state and higher firearm suicide rates for both men and women."

On the bolded: A lot of gun owners like to OFF themselves! I guess the media wouldn't get as many viewers/readers, if they tried to make suicides sensational.

Do you live in NY? Just being NOSY! No, really, do you?

It's all heartbreaking. There is so much mental illness in the world now being neglected until it erupts in something like this. And the govt. wants us to take public transportation to cut down on emissions. Not a chance. What a terrible mess this has become. :(

I got up this morning to walk the dog and then tuned into the news, only to be greeted by the early reports of this violence. Felt depressed for most of the rest of the day. Most of the early reports were wrong in the details reported - not surprising. As the day progressed, the NYPD and related agencies gradually came out with more accurate information. The good news is that this guy was a bad shot. Fired 33 times and didn't kill anyone. Just another stupid, angry person out to ruin as many lives as possible. Mental illness? No, not unless you consider anger a mental illness. He will be caught and prosecuted but I'm afraid that the violence will continue as long as we have those who exploit the divisions in our society.
