Ha! California's population will shrink by quite a bit before we get to that point. Lots of people and a few large corporations have already left because taxes and the cost of business and private real estate keep going up while services go down, and homeless communities continue to expand right up onto people's business and private real estate.

Cali's biggest problem is that its gov't doesn't start working on the real issues until it's too late for real solutions. This has become the land of wasted funds and emergency band-aids.

I think that you're 'reading' a lot more into all of this, than is necessary.
 
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - read the actual wording of the CA Flex Alert. People are being ASKED to reduce energy usage between peak times of 4p through 9p, ONLY for a few days.

That means:
- don't run appliances with hi-energy spikes for those 5 hours, such as DWs, clothes dryers, etc. You don't need to turn off your refrig/freezer; feel free to wash clothes in cold water in anticipation of running the dryer after 9p.
- you can MW a pizza or a frozen mac'n'cheese, no problem.
- turn off unnecessary lights.
- save energy by setting your A/C at 78 or higher, especially during the peak times.

Only in an emergency would ANY electric car owner recharge during peak times. If you have a home outlet for recharging, I can almost guarantee that homeowner uses "point in time" electricity pricing from the public utility. Using "point in time" allows picking the most economical time to use electricity (to recharge the car), which is late at night when rates fall due to reduced demand.

Hope this clarifies the original incorrect post which began this thread. Not including the fact that ONLY peak time reduction was requested, and that it was strictly a short-term REQUEST (as it always is; there are very few Alerts issued in any given year and I have lived here since 1969), was doing a disservice to the State of CA in managing energy resources and the people who live here.
 
This is probably far too late in the game, but if anyone is still using any Incandescent light bulbs, do yourself a favor and replace them with LEDs. You may not save the planet, but your wallet will love it. LEDs not only last a lot longer than Incandescents, but they use far less electricity and will make a big difference in your bill.

Line drying is not an option for everyone. There are plenty of us that live in apartments. I hate line dried clothes anyway. They are stiff and hard to iron. I live in a complex. When I used to drive, I noticed my car would look dusty the morning after I had it washed. The clothes line on that side of the complex is very close to the parking lot. I would never hang my clothes there because obviously dust was floating around and settling in that area. The other clothes line, which is at the opposite end and not near the lot, is also close to an area where there's dirt and trees. I wouldn't be able to see either of them from my windows and I wouldn't trust that someone might not take my clothes, if I was inclined to line dry them.

The woman that had the frozen pizza might be heating it in a microwave which uses a little less than 1/4 of a conventional stove's kwh or the NuWave oven. The NuWave oven, which is what I use to make my pizzas, claims to use 75% less energy.

The California mandate requires all NEW vehicles sold in the state after 2035 to be electric. Resale of used cars will not be affected. Gasoline fueled cars will undoubtedly be around for many decades to come.

Increasing numbers of houses are adding solar panels and personal electric vehicle charging stations.

The bottom line: If humans don't quickly stop burning fossil fuels for energy this planet will no longer be hospitable to us and many other species. We are already in crisis stage and may have already passed the tipping point.
 
Sorry if I am repeating myself here but I can't help it! I have written that there are over 30 million registered cars in California last year. Those folks out there dreaming of everybody in California driving electric cars by 2035 or whenever have a lot more faith in endless electric power than I do. Imagine: 30 million cars plugged in every night and millions of air conditioners running all night too. Don't think there will be any power left to watch FOX news in the evening. This scene is beyond my working imagination. Sorry, but the truth often hurts; best to believe in fairy tales.

I had a new HVAC system installed 4 years ago. I went with Lenox, even though it cost more the SEER rating was higher and the warranty was really good compared to other brands. I keep my a/c at 76* and my bill averages $155.00 per month. In the winter it drops a bit. I should tell you that I have a heat pump with a secondary a/c if needed, which I have never even turned on yet. I’m the only one living in my house. I am renting a condo in Hawaii to be with my son for a year beginning November 15. My son found me a 2000 ft. beachfront condo for $2800 month and fully furnished with everything I will need to go to housekeeping. I pay utilities, insurance and maintenance fee.

I don’t know if I should hire a house sitter for a year or leave it sit. I’m not crazy about having a stranger knocking about inside my home for a year. The cops said they will keep an eye on it for me, but I am uncertain.

It’s not that simple. He’s my only child and son. My wife and daughter are both gone. My son was transferred to Honolulu about 8 years ago and wanted me to move out there to be near him and his family. I have lived in Southwestern Florida for many years and have developed relationships with my friends, doctors and church members. Just to leave it all behind now and start anew at my age my not be the best idea, but on the other hand, I want to be near my son so we can still do things together before I get too old and also be able to enjoy my grandchildren. It’s a perplexing situation.

I thought maybe if I rented for a year out there that would give me enough time and opportunity to see if it works out for us. He is retiring from the government and he would like to go fishing with old dad before it’s too late. He has a boat and owns his own home just a few blocks from the ocean and in back of his house he has his own boat slip and can maneuver easily out into the Pacific. His oldest son came back here to Naples, Florida and stayed with me for two weeks this past summer. It was great. After only being here a few days, he was bringing other boys and girls to the house and they would sit out at the pool and talk, play their music, take the boat or jet skis for a ride or do whatever. It really made a great summer for me. When he was packing to go back home, he told me that he didn’t know why I would ever want to leave here. He said he loved it and if I was her next year, he would like to come back for the whole summer if it was OK with me. I told him he could come and stay as long as he wants. I did learn one thing about his new friends, they know how to fish.

I don’t know if I could just pick up and leave everyone and start all over again at 69. It’s not an easy decision. A lot to consider.

Hopefully no entities will realize you're not there and won't be there. I don't know what area you live in to know if that is a concern at all.

It makes perfect sense to me. If we are forced to use elec cars with a very limited range, it is quite obvious that we must live very close to charging stations. Hence, few will be living in the in the country/mountains etc.

I am in a very secure gated community in Naples, FL, but the last person that had a house sitter actually tried to sell the house. Their counterfeit documents didn’t get through the bank. I just don’t like the idea of someone being left alone in my home for a year. I also know homes do not do good when left unattended and used for a year.

Then there’s the story of someone moving into your home while you’re away and you have trouble getting them out. I’m not going to come back and check on it every 5 or 6 moths either.

A person does not need to live in California any longer to understand how they think. If CA can not even supply enough electricity to supply a very limited number of elec cars, it's going to be one hell of a mess when they ban gas powered cars and everyone is forced to drive elec cars.
California has only one nuclear power plant and the so called "green power" is an extremely long way from supplying all of California.
People talk about burning clean hydrogen , BUT they seem to forget it takes some form of power to produce hydrogen. Where the heck are they going to get the power ? Merely wishful thinking on the part of wackos.
