Some Stores Seem To Have Better Employees Than Others. Is it just me?

Target: On my low list. They seem to hire a young demographic (vs. say Walmart) and I've noted young males on their cell phones in the isles and also two were talking with f. bombs going off. I'm not a prude, but totally inappropriate.

I find one of the friendlies stores is the Grocery Outlet. WINCO employees have always been nice. Trader Joe's seems kind of fake but they are usually friendly.

JoAnn crafts is ridiculously understaffed and I've heard they are told to be stingy with their fabric cuts. Not a bit over. I go there rarely. I also can never seem to find help at the big box hardware stores and I'm uncomfortable in them anyway.

Same here.. Many of the large discount stores and the cheaper quality supermarkets seem to have staff who feel that they can block the aisles chatting with their friends or colleagues.. have no idea what stock they have when asked.. talk loudly with their friends or acquaintances.. and often in stained uniforms or overalls..

Uh oh! You gave me an excuse to sound off,, haha!
Walgreens! : Horrible. And not just since the PD. They’ve always been like that. And not just one branch either. Send out ads then when I go looking for the product they don’t have it & never heard of it.
Pharmacy: Rude, act like they’re doing you a big favor to fill your stuff, don’t want to be bothered with questions, sacred lunch hour, will slam down the window even if people are in line.
OTC and cosmetic prices at least 1/3 more than WM or grocery
Constant staff turnover: nobody knows anything about anything, where is or if carried.

Also agree with Remy & Holly. “ Things ain’t like they used to be” Haha.

We have 3 natural foods stores. Two are more modern, staff is decent. The downtown co-op one I hate. Kind of arrogant, pretentious employees and I always feel like I don't look "natural" enough to shop there.

The store isn't real big but once they had rearranged the whole place and I couldn't find jam. So I asked an employee down an isle and her response was "well it's not here." It made me mad. I said "forget it! I'll find it myself." I hope she got the message she came across as bitchy, if she meant to be or not. I don't think I've been in that store in 2-3 years.

If management and/or HR are trained in hiring new employees. And if they actually hire good employees. And if the company and management treat those employees fairly and with dignity, then they will have good employees. If any of this is lacking, they will not have a group of customer centric 'good' employees.....

It is not luck, it is earned!

Oh yes! This is a store I rarely go to. You are right about their pricing. They are high. I wanted to get some of that Arnicare pain relieving cream that was mentioned on the forum. They had it with a digital coupon. I had to have my phone number put in the system. The employee was actually nice enough but they are also understaffed. I don't use their pharmacy so no experience there. But they should put a sign behind the last person instead of making people stand in line and then find out the window is shut. Beyond rude and bad customer service!

It's sad that employees like those mentioned don't realize that the nicer that they are to people, and the more effort that they put into doing an exemplary job, the better that they will feel on the inside. They take the easy way out, and then wonder why they aren't happy with themselves or with their lives.

I used to work for Radio Shack when they were still considered cool, lol. We were trained to have knowledge of everything from electronics to cell phones, so that if someone asked you a question, you actually knew what the heck you were talking about. I would come home exhausted but feeling good about my job. I had repeat customers, too. There was no one standing around gossiping and ignoring the customers; you'd get fired.

About ten years ago we went into a Radio Shack store and the apathy had set in. The two employees there ignored us until they felt like acknowledging us (I mean, two seniors; who cares?) And then they didn't know anything about anything. We left in disgust.

And also MUCH more likely to get a raise or promoted. You usually GET what you EARN.

I don't shop at Target, Walmart, or any of the big box stores. The only stores I've been to regularly in the last three years are the two grocery stores I go to, the local farms I buy meat and produce from, the local hardware store, and occasionally the pharmacy. Fortunately, they mostly have courteous, helpful staff.

I went to JoAnn's for some fabric just before the pandemic hit, and the service was abysmal. They couldn't even cut the fabric properly. When I questioned the girl who was cutting it, she just looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language and shrugged her shoulders. 🤨

I had 3 young men move me last Wednesday. What I noticed about them was the constant use of the "F" word or bomb as some call it. I also noticed a lot of silly laughing and joking. Not good at all!

Here is what I think is rather funny. Every business I have dealt with recently, send me some sort of survey questions that say, "How are we doing?" I think it's strange that nothing has come from the moving company. Maybe they "know" their employees and don't have to send out any survey questions. LOL

To pour salt into my wounds, they claimed that they took 30 minutes for lunch. I clocked them for 70 minutes. I guess they think that seniors are senile anyway so it's easy to "pull the wool over our eyes." Not a great experience but I'm glad its over and I'm away from my last very depressing adobe.

Maybe you should have told them you would deduct $1 from their pay for each 'f-bomb' they said...

You have obviously never experienced Waitrose Holly, we use the Ringwood branch, it's a pleasure to shop there.

I can't think of any rude or negligent store staff, other than those in a Fabricland store.

Maybe it's regional. People in western Canada tend to be pretty nice. I remember being stuck in Edmonton Airport when the plane was grounded by extremely cold temperatures. The airline representative explained the situation, gave her name, and invited us to approach her if we had any concerns. Back in XXXXXXX, the airline would simply have written "Delayed" on the flight schedule board.

It isn't just store employees; don't get me started on medical office staff. I was recently expecting a call to schedule the second in a series of treatments. They said that if I hadn't heard from them in a week, to call. This one woman actually claimed that she had left me not one, but three messages. I am home all day, and have an answering machine. I had them read me the phone number that they had on file, and it was correct. The woman was clearly, brazenly lying.

So she lost out on an opportunity to apologize and make it right, preferring to make me sound like a confused person who didn't notice that I had phone messages.

it's one of the most common complaints in the UK, the rudeness and abruptness of Doctors' receptionists.. ..altho' our Doctors surgery ( office).. leaves a lot to be desired with regard to the Doctors, so far the receptionists there have always been relatively pleasant, but by far the biggest complaint about staff is about Doctors receptionists in the greater part of the country

"Good morning Mr Jones, and what appears to be your problem today?"
"It's my dick!"
"Mr Jones!!!!!!!!"
"Well you asked."
"Yes Mr Jones, but we expect some decorum, you say something like, it's my ear. In the surgery you tell the doctor the real nature of your complaint."
Mr Jones turns around and leaves. Outside he turns around and re-enters the reception.
Smug receptionist says:
"Good morning Mr Jones, and what appears to be your problem today?"
"It's my ear,"
Smug smiling receptionist asks:
"And what is the problem with your ear?"
"I'm having difficulty peeing out of it."

Moral of this tale, p*ss off us oldies at your own peril.

The supermarkets I shop at have nice staff.

I can recall only one argument I had with a cashier who had made a mistake. She would not be quiet while I explained the situation to her supervisor. It upset me greatly.

I was never treated rudely at a doctor's office that I can recall. But then, I don't go there very often.

Re medical offices: there are very few independent practitioners here who are not .a part of some medical group. The groups, whether primary or specialist have centralized scheduling where the person you call for an apt might even have trouble explaining where the office is.
Let alone trying to understand the physical issue you’re calling about, and can’t offer any suggestions on what to do till you finally manage to get that appointment. But some of the independents have very powerful Gatekeepers, and pt needs to try to stay on their Good Side.

I have found that in recent years the office staff in doctor's offices are not anywhere as nice as they used to be.

At the reception desk, it is more difficult to hear given the plexiglass and mask wearing. My last experience went like this:

Me: Dr. So & So wants me to come back in 6 weeks
(Receptionist, is chewing gum, mouth open, wearing a hoodie with hood up)

Reception: Ok, when do you want to come.

Me: Any day but I am not available on Thursdays

Reception: Ok, I have Oct. 27 at 11 am.

Me: Let me put that in my calendar.....oh, wait, that's a Thursday, not good for me.
Receptionist: Rolls eye & sighs, heaving shoulders. Ok when CAN you come?

Me: Never mind I'll check my schedule and call.

It's the same over here, Coles and Kmart employees are so friendly and accommodating, whereas Woolworths, Target, and Aldi are horrible with no manners whatsoever.

I will go out of town or order online rather than go to them.
