What a Real Winter is Like

"Who likes winter?"

If I didn't have to pay astronomical prices for heating oil and snow removal and deal with ice storms and crazy drivers who can't drive on clear, warm, sunny days, let alone in bad weather, I'd like it a lot better. :)
 

The only good thing that I can recall about winters in the midwest was that there were no bugs outdoors. But that was a small consolation as I wasn't outdoors any more than necessary. Winter is way overrated in my opinion but then again, some folks like pineapple on their pizza. Nature never ceases to amaze and amuse me, both human and mother nature.
 
Winter as in kids home due to snow? Winter as in dull gray skies & bare trees. Or no picnics in the park, high heating costs, multiple layers of clothes to go out to shovel snow. Hoping your car will start or at least warm up fast to melt the ice off your windshield. Waiting for the snow plows to clear the roads. Experienced drivers racing past you on ice covered roads<<< sarcasm.

Lots to like, just not what I like.
 
I love winter , as long as we don't get frozen pipes.... winter here...

When I was a little boy, I remember my mom and dad grew up in NE Ohio and I lived there until I was 9. It snowed almost every day, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. The most I remember was a 38 inch snowfall and we only had 1 day off school. Here in Virginia, if we get more than an inch, they now have “virtual” days. No more missing days.
 
I still like winter, but back in my skiing days, I waited for it constantly. Back then, Skiing Magazine was only published during the winter. About September I started making special trips to town just to see if the first publication of the winter was out yet. I used to think this was crazy, even while I was doing it. In march the snow started turning to mush, and while it was great fun spring skiing in a T-Shirt (at times), I was sad knowing that winter was coming to an end.

On the 4th of July, a bunch of us would drive over to Glacier Park, and summer ski in Logan Pass. We would carry our skis up the mountain, and that would take about a hour. Then we would ski down the mountain and that took 2 minutes. But you do what you gotta do.
 
Now that I'm retired, and no longer have to drive in the snow, I can "tolerate" Winter. A 2 or 3 inch snowfall is ok, but I don't care for major snowfalls that linger for weeks before they melt. What I don't like is extended periods of snow and cold weather that keeps me housebound.

neither does ours. The red phone boxes.. what is left of them, have either been sold off to individuals or as in the case of our Phone boxes in our villages have been turned into little village libraries or.. defibrillator stations
