I was just walking around and the periferal site I had didn't alert me to anything in my way. Well, there as a higher ground and I walked into it and down I went! So, as my mother said, watch where you are going. I watch the ground now. I have a nurse who calls me once a month and one of her questions Have you fallen in the last 30 days. I hadn't fallen in months. Ooops. It is harder nowadays for me to get up!

2 summers ago I fell when I tripped over the back door step going out into the garden.. and fell onto the gravel path...

made the pic small so as not to gross anyone out... this was my shoulder..

this was my knee...

... this was my shin...

It really shook me up.. and I'm a lively young acting senior, .. but the shock of falling flat on my face, and just avoiding having my nose broken, was really upsetting.. then just after I started to heal from that.. I stood on the bed to sort something above the bed.. and it threw me off like a trampoline.. literally somersaulted in the air and landed on my back from a height of about 6 feet.. and cracked my shoulder Blade... that was the worst fall of all..

... so much as I hate doing it... I really do look down now at where I'm walking ..

This last fall on Monday really shook my brains....I am
now shaky as heck all over, and almost afraid to take
a step.....I fell just as my right foot hit the step and cramped
and I had no way to stop, even tho I had my cane with me that time....landed on the steps on my back but also flopped over
and banged my shins....so I'm sprouting more bandaids than
ever now.......it just sorta took the wind out of my sails..... :(

you've fallen so often now that you really need to bite the bullet and use a walker.. that will go a long way to saving you if you trip...

I fell on black ice last winter walking outside. This year I smartened up. I moved to a larger apartment with plenty of hallways to walk around. Also, I walk with a small group of ladies known around here as "The Walkies." Good idea not being outside and should I fall or drop dead (heaven forbid), I told them to phone 911. They said they would. LOL

Do be careful Fanci ! I fell twice while I was walking in a span of about two years. The first time I was walking too fast and probably didn't pick my feet up high enough when I tripped on what's supposed to be a safety feature at the curb. My knees were hurting and I had about 8 blocks until I got home. It's a good thing I had on heavy pants or my knee injury may have been worse (I already have damaged knees). When I fell, I caught myself, somewhat with my hands and wound up fracturing my pinky. Cars were passing on the way to the entrance to a major highway and no one stopped to help me. When I sent my son a picture of my hand, he convinced me to go to a doctor who had a custom made brace for my hand which was ready in no time and I wore it home.

The second time, again walking with sneakers..there was an irregularity in the pavement of a parking lot and I fell on my face. I'm blessed that i didn't break a bone or knock out some teeth. My face was a little bruised. After those falls, I remind myself to "prance" like a pony. LOL Lift up those feet and be aware of what's on the ground. I suspect you will do the same. Take good care.

Happened to me just yesterday. I was replacing a baby gate I keep leaning across a door preventing the dog from access to the bedrooms (she’s grown now and doesn’t leave my side so really don’t need the gate anymore) and I suppose turned too quickly and lost my balance and down I went onto the brick floor. My Apple watch was quite concerned. Hardest part was getting myself up as both my knees are bad and it really hurts to put weight on them.

This subject keeps coming to the fore, and rightfully so

I wrote this a decade or so ago, and have posted it awhile back

but

here it is again

Falling down

At the age of four, one falls on a regular schedule.
No big deal
Yer close to the ground anyway
Get up
Run
Fall down
Repeat

When in yer late sixties, falling down is akin to plunging off the edge of the Grand Canyon
Seems about the same space of time to mentally adjust with several choice expletives
Once you’ve determined yer goin’ over, and have made one or more feeble attempts at grabbing (helplessly flailing) at something on the way down, like a small animal or a board with a rusty nail in it, you come to the grim reality that there’s just no stopping you, yer gonna hit.
Hard
Fleeting thoughts of childhood pets, Felecia Moorhead’s heaving cleavage, and health insurance premiums rush thru.

The landing..style points

I’ve never ever landed well.
Even in high school football, where you practice it, forever it seems.
Drop and roll for me was slowly crouching down and flopping over, immediately losing any location orientation.
I was a pretty good second baseman and shortstop, with good hand/eye coordination, but range...didn’t dare stretch out for the hot liner, could topple over, those were for outfielders.

The somersault has been an unattainable challenge, since early on in life, even though Connie Ekbert and her holey underwear showed me the main gist of the mechanics,
in slow motion,
several times...

Types

There’s the falling up
A couple/three months ago I stubbed my toe on a curb, going into a Goodwill Store.
Went down
Landing on my palms
But that one didn’t count so much.
I fell kinda across, not down.

Now, coming off a curb, where the front half of the foot begins to point down, while the back half remains on the curb..heh...that one’s a beaut.
There’s a forward thrust, like some hit man from behind just pushed you into the subway rails.
That one doesn’t give you the grace period of fond childhood memories
Maybe a broken expletive
Maybe

Then there’s the WTF one, where it seemingly takes nothing more than a pebble on the road, or twig in the forest.
This may be attributed to the gait of a vague shuffle after a day of performing feats of long gone youthful brawn in the company of younger folk half my age.

Pain

I used to just wince, then find my way back up
But I no longer experience pain....if...I land on my palms (scar tissue).
If I happen to go down around a crowd of people, I notice they are the ones doing the wincing and grimacing.
Now I just crawl over to an object higher than my waist, hoist myself up,
give the concerned crowd a Nixon victory sign,
and hobble on my way.

So far, I’m good with it all.
Figger it’s God’s way of keeping me humble.

(fell on the ice yesterday...thought I better write these thoughts down while my wrists still function)

That's how my 15 year old Niece was killed . She tripped on the kerb as she crossed the road and fell backwards and was killed outright by a passing car.. :(

Here's the fractured pinky I got a few years ago when I fell and somewhat braced the fall with my hands. Apparently I landed on the left hand wrong. As you can see, I still cannot line my pinky up with my other fingers like I can on my right hand, even though a brace was used on it. At least my pinky doesn't hurt anymore though. These pictures were taken a couple of days ago. @Pecos

From my experince and with my Mom, frequent Falling can be due to decreasing balance, and may be a symptom of Parkinson's disease, in early stages.

See your doctor or get a referral to a neurologist.

Best of luck

Jon
DH's balance is terrible, and he is a tall man, so it is a long way down. I worry all the time when I am not with him, I mean like if he is outside and I am inside. He fell out on the gravel so I went to help him up, that was a mistake as I fell with him. A neighbor came and helped us both up. So now I am not supposed to try, if it's a bad fall I will call an ambulance. Otherwise, he will crawl to something he can use to get up. He uses both a walker and a cane in the house.

I , also, have had issues with falls over the years. Sometimes it is my feet not cooperating when I stand up to move. If you note on my avatar pic, you will see part of a sling over my shoulder. That is from when I fell outside the grocery store and broke my shoulder.
Thing is, with me, I am no longer able to get myself up, and need to hit my button for help. For me, I just have to stay on top of keeping the floor around me clear .

I have fallen twice in the past 7 years. First time I broke my foot 🦶 and ankle while running down the stairs. Second time I fell whilst getting onto the stairs. I ended up sliding down the stairs on my butt. I was just sore after that time.

I am extremely careful now on steps especially. No running down them anymore for me. My balance isn't what it used to be.

I notice that sometimes I'm a bit off kilter when I'm walking lately. I think part of the reason is visual changes and some of it is existing balance issues. So I do try to be very careful. I still haven't needed to use a cane yet though. For some it could be inner ear issues too.

Sorry to hear about your accident @OneEyedDiva but, I can't help but notice what nice nails you have - very elegant. (y) :)

On a closely related issue. I had a horrible knee experience last week, worse than any I have ever known. I'm remodeling a bathroom, and have been down on my knees or in awkward ladder positions, and I don't remember injuring myself, but 4 days ago I woke up and could not get out of bed. The pain was of the "worst ever" category. I've had difficulty getting out of bed at times before, but never where it was impossible. I never left the bed and didn't eat for two days, luckily I had a junk bucket for rusty nails and plumbing parts to be thrown away within reach of my bed. That came in handy, but I will spare you the details. I called a close friend who came over to let the dog out, and who took care of a few disgusting details, for which I don't think I can ever repay her, although I actually hope I will be given the chance if she needs me someday. Talk about being grateful for good friends.

I'm still in a bit of pain, but regaining my ability to walk and function after such immobility and discomfort has been remarkable, which I don't understand. I won't be hiking with my dog for another week, but I can now drive and go to the grocery store, which I will in a couple of hours. It's a grim reminder of what could be in store, a bridge that we may not cross so easily in the future. Let's make the most of our lives now, part of which involves being extra careful.

I also worry about falling, we all should. Lots of good advice above.

My wife fell about a year ago, broke one wrist and badly sprained the other. She always has fallen more that me, I keep warning her to be more careful.

Of late my knees have me being particularly careful of falling. I use a cane whenever the ground may be icy or uneven. I have always looked down whilst walking, I believe that has limited my falling. However now my physical therapist says its wrong, that I should look straight ahead. Right now that seems important as my knee extension has improved and I need to walk more upright. I have mixed feelings about and still look down a lot.

That is correct. You should always look ahead to where you are going. Actually holding your shoulders straight and not bent over, along with your head helps. When I worked as a CNA, that was what we were taught to do with our residents. I use the walker, even in my apartment, but always walk with good posture and looking ahead. I see what is on the floor or ground before I get to it.

I have to be careful as my balance is off. Plus, my sciatic nerve in my right leg kicks up frequently, so have to be double careful.

A cane isn't too much help here, but my walker gets pulled out when I am particularly unstable.

Thankfully, it doesn't happen too often.

I haven't fallen in ages, which is good.
