Community-wide Garage Sale Weekend

I just saw on the village FB page that our town-wide garage sale weekend is going to be on May 6 & 7. That's earlier than they usually schedule it which is the weekend after Mother's Day. It is also the weekend of Town clean-up where residents can bring "safe" items to the town garage for disposal, so there will be a lot of congestion there. Someone didn't think this through.

Good weekend to stay home. People don't care where they park and don't pay attention to traffic. They are so focused on what is for sale, they walk right in front of cars. Our area has one every year.

Neighborhood Garage Sales, which used to be really fun, have petered out here. They still have them, but only 3 or 4 houses in the whole neighborhood participate. I went to two of them last weekend. One, in a large neighborhood, had one-count-'em-one garage sale. The other one had two.

I've pretty much given up going to garage sales.

@debodun I hope they get warts and ugly toenail fungus.
They probably already have them. Picked them up at a garage sale.

I posted the pic of my last year's sale on Facebook and someone replied that it was too organized and neat - people like to rummage trough boxes hoping they'll find undiscovered treasure.

It's a lot of work now that I have to move everything up from the cellar. At the old house, I could leave things set up in several rooms and only had to put things out on the porch and front yard. Having someone help is more work than doing it myself, they always have to ask, "Where do you want this?", and by the time I explain, I could do it.

I'm frequently surprised at what people DO buy. I put things out saying to myself, "Nobody will ever buy this." and it's one of the first things to go. Also, the things I think will sell, I still have after many sales.

Today's society seems to want new things and don't want to buy someone else's used stuff.

The prissy old ladies in church really pucker up when I mention "garage sale" like it's something only trashy people go to.

Oh come on Deb! You can handle these prissy old church hags. I mean ladies. 🫢
Keep doing your own thing and don’t worry what anyone thinks. It’s your stuff. It’s your time. It’s your life.

I keep asking the community garage sale organizer to switch to having the sale on Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday. Sunday is notorious for being a dud as far as garage sales go. Last year only 3 cars stopped on Sunday and only one person bought anything. It also keeps me away from church.

Deb..those vintage wooden office chairs would go in a heartbeat here.. so many people are into upcycling..

Must be an older picture of your sale. Either that or your lawn guy didn't do a very good job of mowing the lawn.

Thought also the ability to get rid of the stuff for free that never sells at the town garage would be something you could do to decrease the amount of work it takes you to set up & take down.

She states it’s a picture from last year.

I had planned on starting to set up today, but it just keeps raining. It's been raining every day since Saturday and it's the annoying type of rain - it looks like it's clearing and then 30 - 60 minutes later it clouds up and starts raining again. Even if it totally cleared up, the lawn is still soaking wet. Supposed to be like this through Friday. On the morning news, it was reported we got nearly 2 inches since this weather pattern started.

I've been trying to find the value of some old newspapers. They range in date from 1862 to 1923, some have significant news stories (Titanic sinking and the death of President Harding). I've sent messages to some local antique dealers and numerous online antique appraisal sites. I only heard back from one dealer and he said that's something he doesn't handle. I didn't ask him to handle them, just give an approximate value! And one other online appraiser indicated that said these can be easily reproduced, so not worth much when a collector can purchase a copy in good condition. I had them for sale at the old house and advertised them on Marketplace for $25. A man came to look and picked up box they were in and started walking away with them. I stopped him and said they weren't free. He looked like I slapped his face and replied something to the effect - I'm a historical conservationist and you should be happy to donate them so they can be preserved. I refused and he dropped the box and stalked off.

People sure have a lot of nerve @debodun trying to just take the papers.

However, they really aren't doing you much good. I'd try to sell them for cheap and take any offer for the box. Also people in the business probably don't want to just give appraisals for free.
