Is it possible to get a mental health forum?

There’s a Health Forum category but I’m wondering if we can get a mental health forum ?
There are so many topics that fall into this category that I think would be a good addition.
I think this is a fantastic idea! How many of today's problems that we hear about in the news every day are being caused by mental breakdown and mental illness of marginalized and alienated people who simply cannot cope with the stresses and demands of modern everyday life? I support your idea 100%

but can'te we fall into the trap of thinking we can cure everyone??/
Nobody is suggesting that mental illness and psychiatric breakdowns are either curable or treatable. The question is how to keep society safe from these wretched individuals who think mowing down a school full of innocent children with an AR-15 assault rifle is the solution to what ails them.

ah you mean devil worshippers or psychotics or evil ones - health services need to be much more proactive and qualified in spotting such illnesses in people who may not be visible ill anywhere but certainly are - but the cost of this will be colossal excluding the fact that we need much more qualified personal and secure 'specialized hospitals' for the criminally insane.

This isn’t what I was referring to in the least.
I thought it would be nice to have an area where we could discuss things like:

- depression
- loneliness
- declining cognitive functioning
- anxiety
- obsessing / compulsive thinking
- dementia
- changing moods
- insomnia or lack of sleep
- self worth
- insecurity
- alcohol or substance abuse
- eating disorders
- family issues
- grief & loss
- emotional wellness
- divorce
- trauma
- domestic abuse
- phobias
- anger management
- self care
- self image
- self respect

This would be a place to discuss mental health , NOT replace proper care

My thoughts were that if there was a specific section available, maybe more members would be more comfortable discussing some of the above topics since mental health certainly is a bit part of aging.

I do beg everyones pardon - I was for some reason focussing on mental illhealth - I see nothing wrong at all with a mental health forum on which all aspects of maintaining a sound mental health could be discussed! remember there is a difference between "mental health" and "mental illhealth" the above list provided is too muddled as it includes mental illhealth conditions and simply mental health issues like self respectd and self image - these apply to all of us not just to the mentally afflicted ill-health persons. I think we need to be crystal clear before we engage on discussing "mental health " or "mental illhealth" are we will be in a quagmire of utter confusion!!

Does it have to be so complicated? I have said right upfront that I suffer from depression and anxiety. Part of the journey to wellness is being honest about your struggles.

@PeppermintPatty, so yes I think it is fine to have a thread for those that struggle with mental health. Most people do not realize that your mental health also affects your physical health. I think it is fine to have to a place to discuss or share your struggle.

I also think that @Matrix should have a time to consider this. He has consider the ramifactions of granting such a request. I really think it could put him into a bad or legal situation.

If something is posted and not taken as serious could lead to a bad outcome because it was not reported. I realize that @Matrix does not know everything about us, therefore, if someone posted about selfharm or harm of others how would he get needed help to that party. It is just not realistic or acceptable to put that on @Matrix.

We need to accept the fact this is not a category/subject that he can't make a category for. If we, as individuals, are struggling, we can start our own threads for advice when we need it.

this still sounds risky and subject to legal challenge - once we start discussing mental health conditions and giving advice - possibly against medical advice then the owner of this site carries legal ownershipo of course so has to be crystally clear legally whether we can discuss each other mental conditions which may mean contravening doctors prescriptions and advise??

Matrix has no liability for any members health or well being. There are many things mentioned on the forum regarding end of life decisions that he has no control or responsibility for.

Just the other day a few members mentioned some ideas about what they would do if they were in a certain situation. There have been many discussions about what members would do before going into a nursing home. A disclaimer covers all that which I’m sure he has already.

Aging people aren’t as cognitively sound as they once were, so perhaps some questionable dialogue is expected on a senior forum.

Plus there could be a disclaimer written directly into the the mental health category which would take any responsibility off the Matrix.

There could also be a ‘help needed’ warning page which could be inserted when such topics occur with names and numbers of help available for those mentioning ideas about suicide.

It could be a page written right at the start of every section which members could copy and forward as a reminder of the various hotlines and help available to those who may need it .

@PeppermintPatty Like I said, I think it is great idea but I don't feel this would be a good position to put @Matrix in. Everyone these days is sue happy, we may not think it is a problem but I am not a lawyer and I don't know what the liabilty could be.

I know we have discussed many end of life situations here. It is up to @Matrix to determine what should be allowed, not us as the members. If there was any reason for someone to file a lawsuit (even a family member of one of us). He would still have to have a lawyer and go to court. That could be very expensive even if he was not found liable for our actions and words on the site.

Nothing would really change to what’s already being discussed here on the site. I’m not suggesting we have a section dedicated to the easiest ways to kill yourself.

Site owners aren’t responsible for what people discuss. If that were true then half the things written here may have copyright infringement issues.

Thank you Patty. It is very distressing to me that I once was a grad student at Oxford and now I can barely put a sentence together. I am very worried about cognitive decline. I even just forgot what I wanted to say next.

I would love the opportunity to delve into such things.

Thank you so much for the suggestion!

I think it would help me. Thanks again!

Thanks for the link PP, that's a good article to read. Here is one quote I particularly appreciated:

“Yes, Facebook is irresponsible, and Instagram and Twitter are irresponsible. Nevertheless, the public, not government, should be who rejects questionable information from those sites. If the government removes Section 230 protection and opens these sites to defamation lawsuits, you’ll bankrupt those companies, and that will be the end of the Internet.”

As awful as some of what gets posted on the internet is I am glad we protect the platforms. It does however give us information consumers a bit more responsibly to sort out nonsense, but I'd rather we do it than the government or courts.

You’re still a smart cookie. Don’t sell yourself short. 😊

I think most of us have mental health concerns. How could we not? Many of us have had the experience of witnessing loved ones mental health decline with age so know first hand the consequences of that. Plus this type of cognitive decline probably adds to the feeling of loneliness. A dedicated place to talk about this would be nice. I’d very much enjoy talking to you and others about such topics. We could offer support and share ideas with one another.
