Is coffee in Diners free after the first one?

All American shows I watch where people eat in Diners, they have a black coffee and the waitress comes back time and again to top up the coffee if the guests wants more.
Do you only pay for one coffee then it is a bottomless cup?

Yes, that is the custom. I don't think I have ever been charged for a refill in a diner or restaurant.

Not free in the cafe's here...the only place that does free refills is the Weatherspoon chain of pubs... and tbh it's not worth having..

That's right and some charge $5 for an ordinary cup of coffee so you end up paying for a refill.

atthe weatherspoons they don't do that with the tea and coffee.. it's only less than £2 for a cup, and then you can have as many refills as you like.. but it's barely tepid... so not many people have more than one cup...

That said.. there's many pubs who do ''free '' refills of soft drinks.. Coke in particular, and yes they charge much more for the first one, to cover the price of the rest.. and tbh once you've drunk a 1/2 litre of Coke.. who wants any more..?... so they're quids in...

oh we don't get the luxury of a person... we have to serve ourselves refills from a machine

People in coffee klatches that are busy yappin.

Most restaurants offer numerous refills and it is hot. No extra charge for it.

Most of the privately-owned diners I’ve frequented do offer free refills, with waitresses going around often with coffee pots, sometimes asking and other times just automatically pouring out a full fresh cup for you, whether you’re so inclined or not. This can actually get annoying if you’ve doctored your cup with cream and sweetener to where you want it to be, and then have to re-adjust your mix…

Chain restaurants tend to be less attentive, and you often have to flag down a waitress to get a refill. They really don’t want to be bothered. Some get around the need to refill as often by starting you off with an enormous mug of coffee you may not finish… ️

Diners here do give free refills. Upscale restaurants do not. When I was an active Trooper on duty, I got free coffee wherever I went while in uniform. I think most cops and firefighters do.

On most America shows, nobody ever pays for the meal. I think in the US, the more formal a place, the less you'll get a free extra cup of black coffee.

I haven't been charged for a second cup of coffee in decades in the US. Chains included.
