Do you have/want/don't want a dishwasher?

Growing up one year living in a new San Diego suburb during 1963, yes we had a dishwasher.

My current 1960s era 2 story townhouse was before dishwashers were common. So no. As a single male senior with mediocre food prep skills, I never have much to hand wash in my kitchen sink and have a long habit of keeping my sink clean, free of dishes etc. So tend to wash items in the sink at least once each day.

My sink did have disposal which over decades I replace twice. But maybe 2 decades ago removed the last one that clogged and since just move food garbage to my outdoor trash can.

I spent the first 52 years of my life without a dishwasher. Now that I have one, I seldom use it because it's just me and my husband and it takes a long time to fill it up. I keep putting things in the dishwasher then taking them out and washing them by hand because I tend to use the same things over and over every day.

Similar experience. Just myself and I don't build up a load of dishes to wash. Just a few things I use over and over. Dishwasher is where I store those things after hand washing. I run the dishwasher about every couple of months if I think about it, just to keep everything working. Oh and I have tossed knick-knacks and such in there for a cycle of good cleaning.

I use mine once a week. I don't dirty any pots or pans, just spoons, forks, coffee cups , and the like. Oh, and the coffee pot.

I never had a dishwasher before, but when I moved to this house about 10 years ago, there was/is a built in dishwasher which I never used and won't even try it. I suspect that it probable leeks and is broken like many other things were. Besides I'm by myself so don't have many dishes and I wash them as I use them

I can understand that. There are times when I just do what little I have at breakfast and supper, lay them out to dry on the counter. Then put them up. No real necessity for a dishwasher.

We have a Bosch. Does the job. We live in an area that awhile back was in the grip of a drought. The local water district was, and is, very big on water conservation. Surprisingly, as a conservation measure, they recommend a dish washer rather than washing by hand.

I have one, it stopped working in this apartment and I won't ask for it to be repaired. I DO NOT trust these manager/owners. Why replace my dishwasher when they can get rid of me and get more rent for the place. So I'm doing them by hand and fighting to move. The fight I'm losing.

I went through something similar. I never had a dishwasher until I was 44. Most of my friends had them. They do clean well but take a long time. Also watch the water bill go up. So, I don't get bent out of shape about not having a dishwasher. Have one now, there's something wrong with the starter switch. So I'm totally okay without it. And I cook a lot! It just doesn't bother me. :)

We are not allowed to have regular dishwashers here. But due to water backing up in my sink, sometimes dirty water or water with food particles from other neighbors on my line, I found a countertop dishwasher a couple of decades ago. Now I'm on my third one, a Koldfront. I did without one for a short time, until I couldn't take it anymore. Now I wouldn't be without one. I hate...let me repeat...hate doing dishes! Granted we rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher but it's really helpful that once the cycle finishes, I slightly open the door and the dishes air dry. Even though I found out the rinse cycle does a pretty good job, I still rarely use that feature.

Our old dishwasher finally conked out. We looked at new ones but any with a built in disposal were very expensive. We had purchased a dishwasher on Craig's List for $30 just for the racks to replace ours when it was working. That one sat in our shed and when the old one broke my husband got it out of the shed.
It was in good condition. The person who sold it said it was broken. He didn't know how to fix it or didn't want to deal with it.
My husband tinkered around with it and got it working, put the racks back in it, and we have been using it ever since!
And, it has a built in disposal. I like that feature as you scrap the dishes but anything left gets ground up. I rinse the dishes first but just like to know nothing will get by.
So, $30 for our new dishwasher.

I have a dishwasher in this house that I inherited, but living alone for 5 years now I don't use it. I'm told that they use less water than handwashing but I'm skeptical about that and as my well supplies my water I'm reluctant to use more than I have to. So I've accepted hand washing my dishes.

It takes me 10 minutes to wash dishes for the two of us
It takes my husband over 30 minutes to clean the kitchen. Before making dinner, I wash the coffee pot and SS coffee mugs and anything sitting around. Pots and pans, sharp knifes and big mixing bowls don’t go in. He scours everything. I can’t imagine how long it would take if we didn’t have the DW. Guess what, our kitchen is immaculate. Seriously, it doesn’t need this much attention.

Yes, we actually have 2 dishwashers. And when the first one wasn't working, as we had it for awhile, so my husband ordered a new one. But, I was having a difficult time learning how to use it, especially after I had a stroke, so my husband fixed our first dishwasher, and stored away the new one. I found we are able to load more dishes in our original dishwasher.
