Why I Don't Go To The Senior Center

IMO 50s and 60s are much too young to be retired. I realized pretty quickly after my early retirement that I could sit around and be bored, volunteer or work again and put some money away for retirement. We had planned to travel but that was not to be because of hubby's health. So, I worked for 20 more years and recently retired again with some financial padding.

Let the senior center take care of itself.

I live in a medium size suburban city of Silicon Valley with a large community center with athletic fields and courts, swimming pool, just a few blocks away. No actual "Senior Center". Have never involved myself therein. Given this thread, will make a point to become a bit involved, at least registering and attending something.
 

I love going to my senior center and I'm in my 60s. It's not just about "me" - like, what can it do for me, me, me. It's also about being there to aid others who may be living alone (I've met several widows) and conversing with them. Yesterday, I played Christmas music on the violin with another widowed lady who sang along. It was enjoyable, and the people who heard us, complimented us. Anything to bring cheer to others always makes me feel good.

That is an issue here too. I don't want to go to either. There is a small casino about 30 miles away but that is not my idea of a good place to go alone either. My social life consists of the ladies at the post office and strangers at the doctor's office.

Hollydolly - I was considering moving into a retirement village and I was shown around. No, that was definitely not the place for me, they all seemed so much older than I was, so I never went back.

The Villages Retirement - Resort-Style Living in Florida is a happening place for the young at heart. It's been called a Disney Land for the elderly.
Never set your sights too low - if you aim for nothing you'll hit it every time.

precisely... In reality I thought when I got to be this age I would enjoy going to 'senior social occasions'.. but like you I found that the majority of senior centres have a membership which seem to be of people so much older.. or mentally much older than I am...

@Gardenlover , I'm sure I;d have a completely different view if we were talking of senior centres in Florida... even in Spain the senior centres , are much happier places.. everyone over 60 goes to them to enjoy outdoor activities in the sun, ..line dancing, bowling.. etc...

Yes, everyone is in a different chapter in the book of life. It's my wish that each chapter brings us a different type of joy.

I'm trying to avoid falling into the trap of judging, but... I'm reminded of Rodney Dangerfield's "You musta been something before electricity!"

My mother was in assisted living and it does look like that. I can't you imagine fitting in with that at all, Holly.
