The Curse of Updates.

Change brings continued profits.

I'm writing this on a PC I bought in 2007. Minor upgrades, I've gone from Windows Vista to Windows 10 but 11 won't install here so sooner or later the end will come.

Why must they fix things that aren't broken?
This may be the question of the day.
One of the most recent updates from Microsoft changed the way File Explorer sorts folders and files. Previously one could choose from a variety of sorts (alphabetical, by date, by type, Etc.) For reasons unknown MS changed it to sort by day and time and removed the ability to custom sort. At first I thought I had inadvertently changed a setting but after hours of work I finally found that this was an intentional change from MS included in a recent update. It seems as though they decided they know best how we should view our files. It took a while but I finally found a program called "WinSetView" that was able to restore the ability to sort files. I can't think of any plausible reason for changes like this.

YouTube won't allow AdBlcok for YouTube anymore.
Use Ublock and copy/paste this into the dashboard part of the addon

Code:
youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false)

youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0)

youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, [])

youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

could you elaborate on this: "copy/paste this into the dashboard part of the addon"? Where would I find the dashboard of the add-on?

Once the addon is installed, click on it and then click on the Dashboard icon (circled)

Then click on My Filters at the top and paste the code in the field below, then click Apply Changes

I wondered what you meant, and so I somehow set my very full Documents folder so that the files were separated by dates (last week, this month, long ago, etc.) and were alphabetized within those sections. Very annoying if I wanted to scan through them for a specific file.

A little searching and I found the fix. The above is due to "file grouping":
Redirecting (link goes to the Microsoft website - answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-stop-file-explorer-sorting-by-week-and/c1d77973-0c3c-4fb3-9711-b93d94321be3)

To turn off file grouping feature:
  • Open a folder that is Grouping by/sorting using week and month.
  • Right Click in the folder
  • Select 'Group by'
  • Select '(None)'
That fixed the whole folder (the only one I'd turned on the weird grouping thing), and they're back to alphabetical. And I can still, as usual, control how I want them to be displayed:
- by Name (alphabetical, which can also be reversed — z to a)
- by Date (can also be reversed — latest to earliest)
- by File Type (same)
- by Size (same)

I very much appreciate your time to research and provide an answer. The problem is this change was coded into the registry and the technique you posted (right click, group by, none) would only stay in effect as long as that folder was active. If I closed file explorer and reopened the same folder it would have reverted to the file by time (or date) format. It was maddening!! I was watching on the Microsoft website to see if they would post a fix but they have not. It seems that "WinSetView" was the only permanent cure. Again, thank for your work on this, it's appreciated.

Hate this..I bought my first iPad in 2015….it is only useful now as a radio and kitchen timer.
The second one I bought is going that way…it no longer plays you tube on the app as IOS 12 is as far it will go.
My current iPad is running IOS 16 something and it’s not getting updated as long as my apps keep working.
Just checked my ipad ..it says I don't have enough storage for youtube ...wtf ?

I have the Ipad Air 2...running OS 14.2... does that mean it's out of date ?... I've had it years but it's like brand new..

That's a gripe I have. "App bloat" seems almost certain to obsolete a device before its time. Even on devices that can use SD card storage the "apps" usually must reside on internal storage.

I just found this..it looks like I can't have youtube...

Here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - ā€œgenerationsā€ are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3 - iOS 12.5.1

Newer models, not appearing in this list, are all able to be updated to the current version, iPadOS 14.4.

Your issue would suggest that you have an iPad2, iPad3, iPad4 or iPad mini1. As you can see from the preceding list, update of these models to iOS11 or later is not possible. These are all 32-bit architecture devices - all of which a long ago obsolete.

If your iPad is capable of being updated to a more recent version of iOS/iPadOS than is currently installed, these support pages outline both the available methods by which the update can be performed - and troubleshooting should you experience difficulties:

Update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch won’t update - Apple Support

iOS update and restore errors – Apple Support

If you iPad is an older model, you would be well advised to consider replacement with a more recent iPad capable of running iPadOS14.x. Any of these models will not only be compatible with the vast majority of Apps, but will massively outperform an older model iPad in every respect.

Some web-based services, such as Youtube, may still be accessible to you using a standard web-browser. That said, many services also have minimum browser requirements that cannot be met by older devices.

It is definitely time to get a newer iPad, @hollydolly . However, the problem you are experiencing with space is NOT because the iPad is old.
Apple gives you a certain amount of free storage in the iCloud. When you use up that free storage, then it tells you that you did not have enough storage. What you need to do now is buy some extra storage, and probably the cheap 99 cents a month will be plenty of extra storage for you.
I have the $2.99 one and it is for both Bobby and myself, and all of our devices, and we have lots and lots of extra room now.

Go to settings, your name, and then iCloud, and it will show what you are using storage for and say you are using XXX amount of XXX storage. (Mine says I/we are using 106gb of 200 gb), and it should show the same thing whether you check on your iPad or your phone, because they share the cloud storage.

Underneath, it says ā€œmanage account storageā€, and , from there, it will show you all of your usage and say ā€œchange storage planā€.
Then you can just choose which plan works best for you, and after that you can put the Kindle app back on, and any other apps you want to have on the iPad.
If you do not intend to replace it, then put as many apps as you think you would use while you can still download them to the older device.
Hope this helps, Holly…..

The new iPads just came out, and right now is the very BEST time to get a great deal on an older ipad. Also, places like Amazon and Best Buy (or what ever you have similar in England) are having clearance sales and also refurbished models on sale now as people trade in for brand new models.
My iPad Pro is from 2017, so it is over 6 years old, and still works perfectly and updates to the latest iOS; so I would suggest that if you get a used/renewed model, get one from at least 2020 or newer. And get an iPad Pro, it is worth the extra price !

Also, after rereading your post again, I think that it is possible that you have used up all of your memory if you have an older model with something like 32gb memory. So, you need to check that as well as the iCloud storage, and see what the issue actually is.

That is odd. I'd closed my Documents folder hours ago, but looked in it again after I read your post — the files were still arranged alphabetically. So I rebooted (turned off the computer, then turned it on again) — and still, the files are arranged alphabetically. And I can still sort them alphabetically, by date, by size, by type.

So ...

That isn’t bad but some Apps need a higher OS than that.We are onto IOS 17 now.
The You tube app should work..it currently needs IOS 14 or higher…ruling out my first two iPads.
If there is an update available I would install it…but you may be close to to the point where your iPad cannot update.
My first two stalled at IOS 9.3 and 12.5.

thanks Yvonne..however I pay £8.99 per month for extra storage for my Mac.. I thought that would cover the IPad ...no ?...I've been paying the higher amount for a long time ..

Over the years when I had Windows 95, 98SE, and maybe XP, there were some problems with updates, but not anymore. I have Windows 10 and have had no problems. In the update section, I'm informed that my computer can run on Windows 11, but I haven't bothered to install it. I don't think that I really need it. When I went from 8.1 to 10 on my laptop, it was slow as hell, so I junked it. I didn't really need a laptop anyways.

I hate updates so much. In my case, when I updated my Mac operating system, it's causing delays in just about everything I do. That "spinning beachball of death" pops up way too often and slows every operation down. I tried to downgrade myself but it didn't work. I took the computer to Micro Center to see if they could put more ram, which seems to eliminate the problem, but I found out that it's not possible for my model computer. My grandson was supposed to try the downgrade again, but due to our schedules that hasn't taken place yet. A friend of mine says an Apple upgrade is really a downgrade. Boy did she get that right!

I'm seriously thinking about getting a new computer...not a Mac this time. Something I never thought I'd consider. I'm sure that in the past I've had problems with device updates, but I can't remember what happened.

Use Ublock and copy/paste this into the dashboard part of the addon

Code:
youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false)

youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0)

youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, [])

youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)
Ublock has been recommended for me. I installed it and immediately uninstalled it because it also blocks websites I like that it doesn't. As soon as it blocked Discord, which I'm on daily and which my grandson and I use to communicate, it was promptly uninstalled.
