At this moment I am freezing in Texas

Ms has had some extreme cold!!! Can't wait for spring and summer.We had a couple of icy road days this past week, almost every thing closed down and us Mississippians can't drive in those conditions.One more nite of teen temps and then a week of rain and above average temps.Ms has some strange weather at times.

Now it is 14 degrees and not expected to get above freezing today or tomorrow, very thankful we did not lose power!!
 
Something to ponder, for those living in US southern states where there are concerns about the failure of their electrical power grid. How about this....Have the State direct all business locations to TURN OFF THEIR OUTSIDE ELECTRICAL SIGNS, and reduce the inside lighting by 50 percent. To my mind that alone would reduce the amount of electricity being used by a huge amount. There is no good reason for the neon signs on the outside of a closed shopping mall to be on at 3 am during an ice storm. Is this too simple to be at least a partial solution ? JimB.

Great idea I wish it were that simple but here in Ms power usually only goes out due to ice storms or tornadoes (weather events) that cause downed power lines etc NOT to over use of power to my knowledge, now that is not to say in extreme heat/cold we are not asked to conserve power.It is just what we have to deal with down here in the South but not often.

We have a saying in Ms, "if you don't like the weather in the morning stick around it will change by nite fall."

The failure of the grid is a TX only problem since they're not connected to the rest of the US grids. While other states have their problems TX issue is unique and of their own making in the lower 48 states.

Hollydolly, when you're exposed to cooler temperatures over long periods, your core temperature can drop. Sometimes it doesn't take much for hypothermia to set in. Be careful, check for drafts and cover them up, maybe curtain off all but one room, wear more layers, massage your feet, cuddle into blankets and maybe read a good book. Stay warm and safe!

I couldnā€™t help but wonder if not using the heat will lead to excessive condensation and mold in the house. Even when we would go on vacation in the winter we always had the heat on 55 for this reason and so the pipes wouldnā€™t freeze.

:) .. and we shouldn't place heavy furniture in direct contact with outer walls. Also, a fan might help..

I had no idea these existed Trish/.... so I did a little research and lo and behold it seems everyone is selling them including Matalan and B&M... must have started when the utilities went up in price..

our houses are made from brick... it's rare that in these type of house ( not flats in the UK who seem to suffer a lot with damp).. that there's damp, I have it well insulated .... despite any cold or even light rain, my windows get opened every day as well when I'm here... I've had this house 44 years , never had a sign of damp ..and the heating is never left on...

I have routinely left this house empty for months at a time.. and it's been absolutely fine... ...unlike my Spanish house which needs to have de- humidifiers in every room.. and also in the closets built against the walls...even if left empty for a month or more or they get horrendously damp and grow mould

Yes, or even a canning jar of hot water would help.
And when you cook you can warm rocks or bricks or something solid to hold against your chest or at your feet.

on your link John, they are just normal hot water bottles...the ones Trish is talking about go into a pocket which is attached to a belt with velcro fastening...around the back ... great idea, not only for warming hands but also to aid with aches and pains

Thatā€™s interesting Hollydolly. Maybe the bricks make the difference. We have brick homes here but I have never lived in one.
