Ooh my knee really hurts

I've had stiff knees for years but now my right knee is throbbing. The pain is to the left/side below kneecap. It's been niggling for weeks but now disturbs my sleep and hurts constantly even when I sit - in fact more when at rest. I don't know where to put it! I use a cushion as under support for my knees at night.
I did get my knees checked a couple of years ago but arthritis was not diagnosed, I just got sent to a physio, it never helped much. I do 10 minutes stretching exercises each morning to try and loosen things.

Anyhow, I have fortunately fixed a GP appointment this week. Hopefully relief is on the way.

Do you have a knee sleeve? I bought this one almost a year ago with a kneecap injury. Never had to use it yet although it aches sometimes, but it's a comfort knowing I have it in case I ever need it when walking a lot or traveling.

My knee gives me grief too. To relieve it I wear a knee support. You put your leg through it similar to the sleeve, then using the straps, you tighten it above and below the knee.

I saw a commercial this morning about some kind of gel they can inject for knee pain. Maybe you could look into it. I hope something works for you.

The knee sleeve might help. Until you can see a doctor, ibuprofen before bed with a snack could help you sleep. For the best pain relief, go with 400 mg of ibuprofen combined with 300 mg of tylenol.

I use this exact sleeve but it does not relieve pain at night and I cannot bend my knee at all when wearing it. So, I wear it only for bed or for sitting on the couch with my leg stretched out.

This same Patella support was recommended to me by my physiotherapist.. and I find wearing it, if I'm driving or walking any distance, really helps with the pain.

I suffer from OA in both my knees.. and in December finally I got Cortisone injections in both knees... not pleasant, but they've really lessened the pain in my knees by about 85 %...like you Rose, prior to that for many years I suffered with the pain below the kneecap throbbing, kept me awake.. had to have a cushion between my knees in bed otherwise I'd be in agony ...I couldn't kneel down or I would be screaming in pain...Physio for a year did nothing to ease the pain...

I was ultimately sent by my Private Physio to Harley street to have an X-Ray, and be diagnosed ( GP was useless)... Harley street diagnosed Osteoarthritis... so that led me to the Cortisone injections.

I am re-cooping from a new metal knee surgery, here 8 months out now or so, betting yours is worn out as mine was I doubt if anything but replacing it as I did will do much good my was getting worse every week the injections did nothing here for pain at all but your realistically looking at a year to recover time. Not for the weak at all. What are your pain and soreness levels pain here mine are maybe a 1-2,,, soreness 3-5 there is a difference in the 2 for sure... With my surgeons ok I re-enrolled in P Therapy as I feel I should be farther along than I am.

My knees flare up and get red and sore from time to time. This has been happening since I was in my 30s. I was diagnosed with Bursitis. About a week on Ibuprofen and the swelling goes away.

Like others here, arthritis is a big problem in my knees. I'm fortunate though in that the pain subsides if I'm sitting. I know someone for whom sitting makes it slightly worse, and that's just got to be the terrible. Was on the usual pills (Zapain) that British doctors hand out like candy. :D Each pill is 30mg Paracetamol and 500g Codeine. Seems to work for most people, but for me they did nothing. So now I take 2 Ibuprofen and 2 Aspirin/Caffeine/paracetamol as and when needed. I find it works better for the pain.

I've been offered corticosteroid injections into the knees, but decided against it. It wears off after a few months, and you usually need two or three of those a year, apparently. It wasn't something I wanted to bother with. Mind - that's supposed to really help when it is effective.

This sounds interesting. I'll have to pass it on to a friend who deals with knee and shoulder pain that nothing seems to help. Am I correct in thinking "paracetamol" is what would be sold as Tylenol here in the US, Vaughan... or maybe Aleve/Advil? @VaughanJB

Indeed, it's Tylenol.

The other thing that I found helps is taking Omega 3 Fish Oil 2000mg Capsules. But I keep forgetting to order the darn things. Besides, eating Salmon gets me partway there anyway. :)

Thank you. I've been wanting to start fish oil, too, but keep forgetting. I think I've read that there are different kinds of oil they use, so I'll probably research which I want. I need to eat more 🐟 .

Saw my doctor. I need x rays and a physiotherapist assessment. That's a good start.
One thing I forgot was I cannot lift my left foot up after stretching my leg out. The strength has gone ages ago. Funny, I just learned to live with that but it's not normal.

Omega 3 is what you want for joints. In the UK it's actually a very inexpensive supplement, but like you, I never get around to re-ordering. I don't know if there's any science in this, you just have to find what works.

Had my x-ray this week. I didn't enjoy wearing a hospital gown and waiting with other people! I made a joke and we all got chatting, which eased the atmosphere - everyone felt rather silly.
My one knee feels so tender and hurts intermittently, especially when I drive, sit or lie in bed. It feels inflamed inside. The other knee is stiff but less problem yet a few years ago it gave me lots of pain. These things seem to flare up then settle down and I've learned to live with it.
Still, it will be useful to know what's going on in there. I've never had my knees x-rayed before.

I recently had an injection of Syn visc in my left knee as I'm having issues w a worn meniscus aka "old man's knee." Relief began w/in hours and can last up to 6 months. Sleep is now comfortable once again. Cortisone was not in order as my knee was not swollen or inflamed. The injection was not painful at all. 4 weeks out and things are much better.

I might look into other therapies like laser, platelet replacement therapy, stem-cell, and others as things progress in order to regrow the meniscus so I can go back to overdoing my activities. I'm a big believer in physical therapy and exercise but that's not going to help worn out parts combined w arthritis. My dr is a knee and shoulder specialist and quoted studies that suggest surgery is not an effective treatment in my case.

Does the pain come and go intermittently like the weather. The weather can irritate those with arthritis. What you eat will also affect your level of pain. Eating an anti inflammatory diet has been proven to be helpful

A bag of frozen peas switched intermittently with a tens unit helps some.

A hot bath with Epsom salts should help some

Pain killers help with pain but unfortunately you can do more damage since you don’t feel the pain. Choose wisely.

Good luck either way.
