Ways to help painful knees at night

As I await a specialist appointment, I am getting so much pain at night in my stiff knees it is disruptive to my sleep. I put a cushion between my knees and sleep on my side. Often it takes an hour or longer to find just the right place and doze off. Waking and moving means more pain.

I've never known the pain as bad as this. I have begun taking a co-codamol tablet and hour before sleep and it does help some. The pain feels like burning inside and reaches right down my shins. The one knee is tender to touch.

Last night I eventually slept sitting up with the cushion under both knees straight. Fortunately I can sleep sitting up but much prefer lying down.

Any advice of ways to ease this please? I am slowed down all day too. But I feel better moving around and even accompany my husband to walk our dog, though not too far and rather slowly. I can't kneel down to do cleaning or reach for things any more.

Rose, have you tried heat--either wet heat or a heatig pad? sometimes alternating 20 minutes of cold,
then 20 minutes of heat helps.

When I was having a lot of knee pain after getting 26k steps one day I used an ointment that was half cbd and half Thc. I put it on twice a day and my pain was gone within minutes. I did that for 8 months until it healed. It depends on where you live if you’re able to buy it.

Has anyone tried cold therapy and a TENS machine? These are two methods suggested in a book I am reading. I will try them because my knees are so painful now.

What ointment is that please?

Yes. There are cold/hot compresses that can be heated in the microwave or frozen in the freezer. The compresses are movable even when frozen. Some say cold is best and some say hot is best. I prefer to alternate between cold and hot. Equate is a no- name brand. Not sure if you get them but I’m sure there’s the equivalent.

Then there are medicated pads. These pads can be cut into the size you want and left on for however long you want.

There are various ointments to use like Voltaren or Tylenol Tiger Balm ointment
Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly when you use them. Whatever you do, don’t rub your eyes before washing your hands.

Then there are TENS units. These units work very well however, they take time. You need to use them diligently. Dr. Ho makes them but you can get better ones online or off Amazon and for much cheaper.

Then there are medicines that have anti inflammatory properties in them. Robaxicil is one name brand but there are others. There are muscle relaxers also that work quite well. The downsize to these is that they aren’t good for your stomach lining. They eat away at your stomach so after a while your stomach will hurt. Also, taking medicines that make you feel better will get you moving like you arent injured. You might move around too much and when these medicines wear off , feel worse off.

I personally find using a variety of methods work best. Try and alternate between hot and cold. Cold helps reduce inflammation whereas hot usually relieves pain.

I have the same problem.. it's quite distressing to suffer the pain in knees during the night.

The last painkilling steroid injections I had in December have just about worn off now, and the pain is returning in my knees.. Nothing eases the pain for me at night except to take a painkiller before bed...

I'll be calling to make another appointment for steroid injections...again soon

My wife has painful joints for years and has tried many things that really don't help. My joints hurt, but is self inflicted from my hobbies. I bought a couple of earthing mats to slip under the sheets 2 weeks ago. My knees, ankles and shoulders don't hurt the very next day. My wife said that she has not had any joint pain for a week now. I got them from earthing.com.

I think my knees are a good 20 years older than I am. Same problem!

I sleep with pillows under my legs, enough to elevate them, but keeping the leg straight (not bent). My right leg gets one more pillow (more elevation) than my left, it feels better. Keeping them straight while sleeping is the best for me.

Good old fashioned Aspirin is better than Co-Codamol for me. But in reality, taking 2X Anadin Extra (a one pill combination of Aspirin, Paracetomel (Tylenol), and Caffeine) with 2X Ibuprofen has been a miracle combination.

And try Fish Oil supplements. They're cheap, and work well too.

I think it's best to go to the Earthing site for more info. They explain it way better than I can.
We have spent thousands in our lifetime to get rid of pain. So far, the mats are the only thing that has given us relief.

Ok thanks. I went to the website but it doesn’t really explain how it works. I’m going to order some. Did you get the sandals too. I’ve seen people wearing them. I’d like a pair for in the house. Thank you for sharing. My gut feeling is telling me these really work.

I found the directions!!! Under the sheets.

The sandals don't work in the house because the house is insulated from the ground. They work outside. There is a lot of info on their site, but maybe hard to find. I spent 2 days researching after watching the earthing movie. Before I ordered the mats, I spent 10 minutes barefoot on my front porch (which showed continuity when I tested it with an ohm meter). My ankle had been biting for days. After 10 minutes on the porch, the pain was gone and never came back.
It all sounds like hokum but is free to try if you put your bare feet on the ground for a little while.

Sorry to hear of your knee pain! That is rough when it starts wrecking your sleep.

A cushion or pillow between the knees is standard for me as well. You might try some natural anti-inflammatories like ginger root and cinnamon (in oatmeal) since you can not be taking ibuprofen constantly. Also, supportive knee socks that support your knees might help - I am wearing some as I type this.

I have a bit of Sciatica on my left hip and knee.. It's not unusual to wake up in the middle of the night with some pain. A few weeks ago, I saw an ad for MagniLife cream, and decided to try it. I rub some on about 9PM, and have been able to sleep much better.

Thank you so much for adding your health tip to this thread. I watched the movie and truly was blown away for many reasons. Seeing Deepak Chopra in the movie explaining electrons and how we all need to be grounded really spiked my interest. This guy is a genius. He can explain in scientific terms how we are all connected to everything including each other so if he believes in this grounding method, then so do I.

I was really impressing that premature babies that are incubated have grounding wires attached to their tiny little feet in order to keep their hearts beating strong. If major hospitals are using it there must be something to it.

After watching the movie I am going to purchase the bed grounding mats. I’m thrilled to have learned all this and I don’t think it’s hokey at all. For the past month or so I have been walking barefoot in our house. We have 3/4 inch maple hardwood. I realize it’s not the same as walking on natural grass but I find it great for my feet, my knees, my hips AND my back. My husband says our house is grounded. I can’t explain why I feel better. I think it’s more to do with my feet being flat on the floor with no rubber soles.

Anyway I shall purchase this grounding bed mat and let you know what I think.

I'm glad you watched the movie. There is no way that I would've been able to communicate all that info. It'll be interesting to see what your results are.

I have had both knees scoped twice each, so now I get Arthritis. When it comes to affecting my sleep, I take cortisone shots. Pain gone.

You have found a combination that works. I increasingly see this as being key. These regenerative conditions are not curable but we can do much to relieve the pain.

Anyone tried a TENS machine? I used a borrowed one when I had a painful back. It was very soothing.
Today I just ordered one, I need it long term to use for my knees. I had such a painful sleepless night I must do things to cope until I get that specialist appointment - which could be months.
