Maggie Smith known as a prolific actress in the UK, and in her later years gained overseas fans from her part in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter...has died at 88...

She had Graves disease, but no cause of death has been given thus far...

I know from personal experience that she and Judi Dench are very close friends, both almost exactly the same age so Judi will be feeling a loss of a great friend today...

She has been ill for some time, so it's not unexpected, but still a sad loss. I always get her mixed up with Geraldine McEwen....I think they are very similar.

It's a very sad loss for those who loved her as an actress. I believe she was 89.

My first exposure to her was via her stunning performance in 1969's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. I'd never witnessed such a performance up to that date. Since then I always looked forward to seeing her in films. Her talent was limitless.

In more recent times I really enjoyed her in The Lady in the Van (2015), and of course the immensely enjoyable Downton Abbey (2019-2022), where she was unforgettable as the acerbic Violet Crawley.

She was among a handful of genuine veteran superstars of acting. And as they pass on, it's questionable whether there are any who might fill the void.

One very fine actress and also a lovely lady. RIP Maggie.

One of my favorite movies she co starred in is 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' 2011
The story of a group of British retirees who moved to Japir, India to live in an advertised exotic hotel, which turns out really isn't
The cast are all British accomplished actors, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy,Judy Dench, Tom Wikinson,Penelope Wilton. The highlight for me was watching Maggie&Penelope 'argue' with each other just like they did on "Downton Abbey'. Wilton played 'Isobel Crawley',Matthew's mother in DA

Do you remember Maggie's character, Muriel?

Douglas Ainslie: "Would you like some of this?" "I believe it's called aloo ka paratha."
Muriel: "No, if I can't pronounce it, I don't want to eat it."

Maggie Smith was such a prolific actress that had a career that spanned many decades. I think we all remember her in her roles in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter and even the movie Hook and Sister Act, but when I first recalled Maggie Smith was in the 70's when she did a skit as a school teacher on The Carol Burnett Show. She knocked everything she did out of the park. RIP
