Apartment Invasion This Morning

This morning I was sleeping when someone knocking on my door at 10am woke me. I am a late sleeper. I sat up and listened for more. I heard a key in my lock and the door open so I yelled ,Whos there?? No answer but I could hear someone in the kitchen.

So I yelled for them to get out of my house and then I heard a kitchen cabinet door slam. I move slow as I have mobility problems but as I am getting out of bed I was yelling at them to leave. I heard the door shut and the key turn. I got to the door and of course there was no one in the hall.

I called the manager and the maintenance guy and both denied making even a routine wellness check. So the manager is going to run the film in the hall camra to see what's up and let me know this afternoon.

OH wow, that must have been very frightening...it would have been for me, for sure. Get those locks changed, no-one has a right to enter your apartment without prior appointment if indeed it was maintenence.. and if it it wasn't then all the more reason to have the locks changed.

I would have imagined if it had been maintenence or the landlord, they would have responded to your call asking who was there.. the fact no-one answered and left in a hurry after opening cabinet doors sounds like to me someone nefarious has a key to your home... so Demand the locks are changed immeditaely, and get a safety chain or bolt added to your door as a safety precaution while you sleep...
 
I installed a flip lock on the inside of my front door several decades ago, so even if the dead bolt was released,
the door still won't budge. They are inexpensive and easy to install. However be sure to get one with good ratings.

Even when living in an apartment long ago I had installed a flip lock inside the front door.
If the screws look too short, then it's a good idea to get longer ones in order to have more security.

If it's what I'm thinking it is....what a great idea someone had. I stayed at a hotel recently and noticed one of those indoor flip open locks on their doors. I felt safer.
 
If it's a standard key there are only so many different combinations. I once lived in an apt and some friends stopped by. When they rang the bell I yelled out, "one second" because I had my hands full. I heard back, "hang I want to try something first". He used his apt key to open my door, both were they same brand of lock so the key would slip in.

That sounds so scary. I hope you are okay. Did the manager get back to you about the camera footage?
 
Our manager and maintenance have keys to all the apartments. They will give us 24 hour notice if they are checking them for any reason. But on the lease it says if we aren't home when they do these visits they can come in anyway. It sounds suspicious to me that they did not answer you. If it was your manager or maintenance they would have identified themselves. Maybe you should have reported it to the police.

When contacted the managers and the 2 hany men said it was not them.

No he did not but I spoke wit one of the maintenance guys and he said the manager would get back to me. The other maintenance guy was at another location today. Don't worry I am gonna raise he** on Monday with the corporate office about the films.

It's really, really important that you do.. until you get more security on your door, put as someone else suggested a piece of furniture in front of your door...and if it were me if they don't give you a satisfactory answer by Monday tell them you're going to the police, even if you're not, that will make them show the footage of who was in the flat

The same thing happened to me about six weeks ago at about 11:00 p.m. (except l live in a house). I can't ever fall asleep before 12:30 - 1:00 any more. Anyway, l was lying there watching television when my bedroom door started being being pounded on, on the outside of my room at the top portion of the door. It was not locked and it scared me. I started yelling "Who's there!". And then it started pounding on the bottom half of the door. I finally got ticked off, opened my door, walked out into the hallway and continued yelling. I checked the locks on all the doors and windows and all were secure. I went back to watching television.
