Thanks to Matrix for the Election Thread

An opposing viewpoint on this thread.

Political topics trigger me, which affects my mental health, so I'm very careful to avoid those topics.

I'm very careful to curate the spaces that I visit. I take great effort to put any political subforums or subreddits on ignore. I don't go to the main page of Facebook except to see very specific groups there. Since the political topics are all in one place, they're easy to ignore.

But at this forum, they're on the front page since they're not supposed to exist. I've reported several political threads in the last couple months, only to be told that nothing would be done about them, and I was made to feel like my concerns were unwarranted. If a thread about illegal immigration is not a political thread, then a political thread doesn't exist.

For that reason, I've visited here less often lately. I made the bad mistake of visiting on election day to have politics thrown in my face. This is the only forum where political topics are not allowed and the only forum that shoves politics in my face with no way to avoid it.

This is not a flounce. I like this place, so I'll probably be dropping in to see if things change.

But a message to those people whose mental health is affected by politics. Be careful where you spend your time. It's going to matter if people care about your mental health. It's going to start becoming critical.

Removed dozens of posts and issued a few temporary bans today, some political posts were even posted in daily greeting and game threads - it's getting out of hand. I'll be enforcing stricter moderation moving forward.
that's the shame of it all... It would have been one thing to have it all in one thread, but I noticed even on the lovely 'how was your day thread' people were posting political stuff there.. and running the risk of having that thread locked.. just so selfish...

No-one is forcing you to read any of the threads on here. The titles are usually explicit, so it should be easy for you to avoid anything which might upset you.

This is not the way I understand the "no politics" rule at all. A group of adults cannot be censored from talking about *issues* like immigration, abortion, gay rights, etc. The rule is about partisan politics. Now if there's a thread about immigration and someone starts bashing the Democrat or Republican leaders and their policies by name, THEN it becomes political.

You can't ban important topics like I listed, or what's next? Ban religion? Nope. I've read most of the threads here over the past week. Didn't say a word even though my collar was getting a tad steamy. @Matrix is doing exactly what needs to be done.

I feel the same way. In the past I’ve reported threads I thought were overly political but only a few. Now I just don’t bother. The only way I know they are political is when people are talking about politicians and what they are doing. I now don’t click on political threads if they sound political and definitely don’t participate in them. Most , if all, are light hearted threads which I happily join.

What I find really surprising is that there are people here complaining about politics who are the biggest offenders.

Edit: while I’ve reported political threads, I’ve never once reported a member for being political or singled out anyone.

Who are you talking to.... ?......not me I hope..... still iritated me tho' that the politcal discussion was takn onto other threads. I didn't mind it being on the one thread, I thought it all could be contained there, and because it was such a big election, he was letting it ride for a while.but then it got a little heated, and it spilled onto other threads...

Oh, it's already begun again today, but I'm staying out of it. Minds are pretty set to be swayed by a few posts and it's hard to compete with the rapid-fire echo chambers of social media.

There are always going to be a few people on this board that will try to inject as much politics into their threads as they think is possible. The same members that strongly hate our no politics policy. There are also always numbers of new members that read the new member policy per below but don't clearly understand where lines are drawn.

Terms and rules

...Politics is not allowed on this forum, political posts and threads that easily lead to political debate will be edited, removed or locked without notice. Members who continually violate this rule may have their accounts terminated without notice...

Some of us have elaborated more on the issue but those posts require some forum searching to locate.

A question for the admins

...The OP is on a short lease because of his own record of pushing vague content boundaries and dislike for stated board content limitations. He did so again and was spanked, and aware it was his own post. Obviously from responses, his view is that of a board minority, that won't change regardless of whining, especially with elections coming. We can expect all this will heat up in coming months with some "New Members" arriving we can give deserved pain to likewise by duct taping their mouths...

Admin - please reenforce ā€œno politics.ā€

...I've mentioned this before on this board that is supposed to avoid politics, that some apparently did not absorb. Members need to stop DIRECTLY naming political parties and politicians in their threads. There are other ways to reference parties, groups, and politicians without doing so directly. For example, B is the D president. Yeah I know [insert member name], you prefer to demonize directly so everyone can read whatever. Some members are increasingly doing so and some of the same names who do so pop up frequently...

...And one can expect they will continue to push forum policy in that direction and in fact use the fact they bait others herein into the same behavior as evidence many are doing so or it is "OK". Well folks don't be drawn into their game. The majority herein obviously don't want to be reading excessive political diarrhea as is found at many other web boards especially during political election cycles. And yes there are ways to discuss political elements without the usual favorite demonizing tactics political trolls tend to use...

I can understand your point of view.
Here’s how I view it. There are some members whom I like , who like debating politics. Some threads get overly heated and I’d rather see the thread locked than see these friends get permanently banned.

Stop trying to control things. Have you ever thought your friends might be banned BECAUSE of your complaints?

No! My friends are still here. I have never reported any particular person. I’m not trying to control anything. This forum is a no politics forum and there’s a report button for a reason. It’s been a while since I’ve reported a thread. Stop trying to guilt me out. It’s not working. I’ve been here for over 6 1/2 years and at most reported 3 political threads. What Matrix does with the threads is non of my business.

You make it sound like I’m a constant complainer. One complaint every two plus years isn’t much. I never complained about the election thread.

Never occurred to me there might be an open day on political speech yesterday. So I missed out but meh.

The only thing about politics that matters to me is the rule of law and the sanctity of the constitution. I spent yesterday avoiding the news C’est la vie.
