December 8, 1980, 44 Years Ago. Still Remember the Day.

I was watching Monday Night Football. Once Cosell gave the news I turned off the game, took out a little something from my stash and turned on the local FM Rock station. The station played nothing but Beatles and Lennon songs into the next day.

 

we were living in Navy married quarters... 4 weeks from moving into this house, Daughter was 3 years old...


..we couldn't believe it, some unhinged American had shot one of our most iconic musicians , and killed him.... the country was stunned into silence..then outrage !

Somehow it all seems so long ago... he was younger than my daughter is now... ..and yet because his music remains, we feel in some ways we never lost him...
 
It was traumatic. I found out as I was just waking up, my son, a teenager at the time, screamed, "They shot John Lennon!" I worked at the time on a small weekly newspaper so wrote a column about it. I did a lot of crying for weeks afterward. And yet, when I saw the title of this thread I had no idea what it was about until I opened it.
 
Yes..I remember because my mom passed away on Sunday the 7th. So, on Tuesday morning my sis in law and I were picking out an outfit for her. My brother was reading the paper, and called us into the room....."Look, John Lennon was killed", I remember telling him he was full of :poop: and it was not funny. So, it was not a good week

This was such a senseless, stupid, horrible thing. I often think of what the world missed out on (not to mention his loved ones, of course) by losing John Lennon so young. :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

I take little consolation from the fact that his killer will probably rot in jail. (Beatles forums won't even say [well, type] his name; I'm refraining from doing so here as well.)

It was definitely one of those moments that stays with you. I was moving in to a house on the farm and was busy painting the dunny while listening to the radio.
I was stunned and stopped painting.
 
The Dakota near Central Park West is where they lived. The Stone wall there was draped with banners. I took photos of it. On the 14th there was a vigil for John Lennon in Central Park. There was around 50,000 people there. The vigil was around 2 PM. I was there. I'll never forget it.
