Who Knew? Some Fun Facts

In 1901, sponge divers found a strange device off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera in the Aegean Sea. The device is a wooden box with a complex system of gears and a hand crank. Analysis on the device showed that it dates back to the 1st or 2nd centuries BCE. As out-of-place as it seems, the Antikythera Mechanism is an ancient analogue computer that predates Apple Computers by centuries. Most experts believe that the Antikythera Mechanism was used to predict astronomical positions, like eclipses.

A "Hobo Nickel" is the name given to American nickel coins that were hand-engraved by homeless people during the Great Depression.

Hobos used these engravings to increase the value of an ordinary nickel, creating small works of art that they could exchange for food, rides, or other services.

These engravings were often very detailed and creative, and the motifs varied. A common motif, as can be seen in the picture, was a skull. Today, Hobo Nickels are valuable collector's items, and some examples have sold at auction for thousands of dollars.

Shaman Found in 9,000-Year-Old Tomb – and She Had Six Fingers on One Hand!

A recent study details an extraordinary archaeological discovery in the hills of Jerusalem. At the ancient Motza site, researchers unearthed a tomb dating back to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period (7,100 to 6,700 BC). The burial contained the remains of a woman who may have held a significant spiritual role, possibly serving as a shaman within her community.

Anatomical analysis of the remains suggests that the woman was over 15 years old at the time of her passing. One of the most remarkable aspects of the discovery is that she had six fingers on her left hand. In numerous ancient cultures, a trait like this was regarded as a mark of distinction and a sign of being chosen by the Gods for an imporant spiritual role.

The excavation at Motza was conducted between 2018 and 2020, although it was only recently disclosed in an article published in the journal Atiqot. This landmark exploration revealed one of the most extensive Neolithic settlements found in the region. These archaeological efforts were initiated ahead of the construction of Highway 16, which serves as a third access route into Jerusalem from the west. As often happens, this pre-construction excavation uncovered a significant find that might have otherwise remained hidden indefinitely.

A water lily from the genus Nymphaea, this plant became known as the ‘Blue Lotus’, or the ‘Egyptian Lotus’. This aquatic plant is not just a thing of beauty, it has a secret too, and the ancient Egyptians were very aware of it. A symbol of life and immortality, the blue lotus was believed to provide a spiritual connection into the afterlife and offer communication with the divine, as was mentioned even in the famous ‘Egyptian Book of the Dead’.

Entheogens and the Psychoactive Healing Properties of the Blue Lotus Flower

The Nymphaea Caerulea was considered a symbol of life and immortality in ancient Egypt, which used its entheogenic qualities to communicate with the divine. Entheogens are mind-altering substances that alter perception, behavior, and cognition of an individual. They are used often by spiritual and religious groups across the world, across cultures, to connect with a higher divinity.

At least one acient Greek poet referred to Lotus Land, plus we know the Greeks had contact with Egypt. That's where they learned about a land called Atlantis, said to have disappeared under the sea 9000 years before.
