Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May.

Countries around the world have a multi-century history of a day to celebrate mothers.

In the United States, the modern version of the holiday began in the early 20th century at the initiative of Anna Jarvis. She organized the first Mother's Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which serves as the International Mother's Day Shrine today.

Although Jarvis, who started Mother's Day as a liturgical service, was successful in founding the celebration, she became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday.

I can see why Anna Jarvis became resentful. Commercializing a holiday completely takes away the true meaning. Look what happened to Christmas, Easter etc. Many people don’t even know the origins of those holidays. I have always kept Mother’s Day low key. Family comes over and we have tea and usually a cake and I am very happy with that. Beautiful pics RadishRose.

thank you @astralcat !

For many years my older brother and I would always buy the biggest hanging baskets that we could find for our Mother’s front porch. He was always able to bring his in person while mine was usually delivered because I worked several states away and didn’t always make it home for holidays.

Every year my Mother would say the same thing when I called, ‘you should see the wonderful hanging basket that your brother brought me for Mother’s Day, and yours was nice too.’ 😉🤭😂
