The USA Penny is going away.

The US Mint has order its last order of penny blanks. Once they are turned into pennies, the Mint will no longer make any pennies. The smallest coin will be the nickel. Electronic payments can still be calculated to the penny. But, for cash, amounts will be rounded to the nickel.

They might as well get rid of the nickel and dime also, and the half dollar and dollar coin (if those still exist). I'm not sure about the quarter tho, might be useful in gumball machines (if those still exist?).

Agreed!

I have a large plastic container with pennies, that just consider a nuisance carrying around in pockets. Will be glad not having merchants giving me anymore that is usually ironically 4. A sign of endless inflation versus the 1950s era when a candy bar from a machine was one nickel.

Enough to fill a few gallon containers. Hard to imagine my bothering to haul it all down to dump in one of the coin machines because that is just chump change. Would first need to scoop them out into smaller containers for transport. Well now after decades, so many its becoming a nuisance taking up space in my dining area.

Hmmm? ... Might be worthwhile to change pennies into a huge supply of fudge! 😜

For $101 can get 4 customized 2 pound boxes of a long choice of selections. So maybe my choice of,

dark chocolate fudge
peanut butter fudge
maple fudge
Dark Chocolate Raspberry Truffle fudge

I'd like to see our currency revalued by a factor of 10 so that a dollar would buy what 10 dollars does today. Make things like they were back in the good old days. But I know that's not going to happen. So the alternative that I would like to happen is to bring back the $500 and $1000 dollar bills so that a gentleman coulld carry a decent amount of cash in his wallet and still be able to close it and get it into his back pocket.

Same with me, David. Huge containers filled with pennies (others for other change)... but it's not chump change for me because I've been saving them like that for about 30 years. But way too much of a headache to haul them somewhere. You could buy a LOT of fudge with my pennies. Save a hunk of maple for me, eh? 😁 @David777

Me too!

I doubt that it will ever happen due to concerns over criminal use and counterfeiting.

A nice crisp $1,000.00 bill would make a great wedding or graduation gift or make it easier to pay cash for a vehicle or other big ticket items.

Most people don’t realize that large denomination bills were printed until 1945 and finally taken out of circulation in 1969.

Someone from New Zealand can correct me if my memory is faulty, but I recall the last time I was there (admittedly 25-30 years ago) they had coins for .10, .20, .50, $1, and $2. It made great sense to me at the time. Still does.

Don't forget about the $100,000.00 bill.

Here in the UK we still have the penny, in fact, according to fuel companies, we have a one tenth of a penny. Going metric was an absolute gift to the big fuel companies, there's roughly four and a half litres in a UK gallon so when prices were advertised per litre it produced what appeared to be, a dramatic price cut.
Since then, conflict and inflation have pushed the price up. There's not enough margin for what is termed, the naughty penny, that being something priced at 1.99 rather than 2.00. Fuel companies came up with 1.99.9 instead of 2.00. They introduced the "One Tenth of a Penny."

In Turkey, the monetary unit is the Lira. There is a coin called the Kurus, which is 1/10 of a Lira. I was once given a 1/10 Kurus, which was a tiny coin less than 1/2 inch in diameter. I asked what it was for and was told that it was used in banking, to settle percentages.

This was before computers were commonly used and when an amount ended up as 1,015.009 Lira, it had to be accounted for manually, thus the 1/10 Kurus. How unwieldy.

I'm sure that coin has been long discontinued.

The only people, who even use pennies, are the little old ladies, who have 312 little change purses. And they check every one of them to find the exact change, when they're in the checkout line.
Now just hold yer fuzzy horses there, fella! 😁 I am not a "little old lady" still in my 60s. I own no change purse. But by diddles, when I go through McD's for my hot mocha, it comes out to $4.02 and you can bet I give them either four ones and two pennies or a five and two pennies to get a dollar bill back. @fuzzybuddy

Little old ladies in the checkout line, have a minimum of 10 change purses, each containing 2 coins, max. That means each purse has to be opened and searched, repeatedly. It's a tenet of their religion that they must pay with exact change FOR as long as it takes.
