Do you collect things that most people wouldn't want?

I saw an TV ad about odd collections that not too many people would really want to inherit.
Er.... I do have about 50+ coffee mugs from places I've visited. I don't know if my brother will be thrilled about inheriting them. Maybe he's dying to inherit a coffee mug from The Toronto Zoo, I doubt he has one. 🙂

Do you collect things that most people wouldn't want?
 

I have several collections and most of them are dropping in value.

Sometimes things can get too old for younger folks to have any sort of reference point or attachment.

I enjoyed the hunt but the items themselves have actually become a burden.

I have downsized and gotten rid of any collections that I had. Years ago when my aunt was a senior, she said that when she traveled, she just bought a refrigerator magnet to remind her of the places she’d been to.

She said they didn’t take up any space really and she never regretted buying them. I started to do that too, and I enjoy seeing them every time I go to the refrigerator. It reminds me of all the trips I’ve taken. I have gotten rid of so much stuff that my condo could be packed up in one day by one person. I do not want to burden my kids with a bunch of stuff.

Many years ago I collected baskets of different shapes. Hung them on my largest dining room wall.
I got tired of moving them and cleaning them but one basket was a huge egg-gathering basket that was 150+ yrs old.
That one was bought by an auctioneer for $300 so no idea how much it was worth to the right person.
 
I have a big collection of postcards from all over the world. Some I bought myself..very few..but mostly those sent by friends

They're all in albums.. and I'm very pleased I did start collecting them because it's almost a completely dead pastime now.. people sending postcards from thir holidays ( vacations) etc... so I'm sure these will be valuable in the future..

I also have a collection of Ephemera.. of things that were given out to passengers who flew with Concorde... the now defunct supersonic airliner

Things like headed note paper, pens, Vanity wash bags made of leather, with high end potions and lotions within.. menu's etc...
 
Everybody wants my collection of Little Lulus's from the forties & fifties and my collection of Nancy Drews starting from the 1930's. And my Ramparts political magazines from the sixties. And my collection of records, alblums & 45s from the fifties through the seventies. Everybody.

I hate to disappoint Pepper, but I don't want your collection...I've never even heard of Little Lulu... unless we're talking about the tiny Scottish singer, and I wouldn't want any of her music at all...... .. and I've barely heard of Nancy Drew... nor have I ever heard of Ramparts magazines... ...

I also have my own collection of Vinyl records from the same period....

...so you can cross me off your 'everybody'' list...:ROFLMAO:

It is sad that postcards are no longer sent or received much.

Well I’d sure like to come over to admire those Little Lulus. Are they figurines? I don’t even like figurines but I sure do like Little Lulu. Sorry, I don’t dust, if that’s part of the viewing experience.

I have two shoeboxes full of old postcards. Most belonged to my mother-in-law, and most date to the early 1900s. A few years ago I sat down and started researching them, and found that today the majority are worth an average of 3 U.S. dollars each. A few were worth far more. I only half finished the project because it was exhausting. Leaving that for whoever ends up getting them. But I did leave a conspicuous note on the box to let my cousin know they could be worth some money, not to throw them away.

Sometimes I go to antique stores. A big one here has individual booths for sellers, but if all I had to offer were post cards, that wouldn't generate much interest, so I'm just letting it go for now.
 
a few yeats ago i found some rubber stamps at a thrift store so i looked online and found that people made their own greeting cardsl fast forward 10 years and I've gone full circle. Recently my son helped me sell my rubber stamps on Ebay. Some were rare and sold for way more than i originally paid for them.

I collected, along with my husband, out of print children's books. I collected cookbooks as well.

I also collect Whirly Co. travel mugs. I only drank from those mugs for about 30 years, all told. Then a fellow collector online told me to stop because whatever is in the plastic isn't good to ingest. So I threw the mugs away.

And old toys: Fisher Price, Playmobil, Dollhouses, American Girl stuff (Pleasant Co.), etc. When my kids were young, they played with them.

that reminds me....

about 25 years ago I was working on a TV antique show, and one of the experts told me that future antiques are things which are disposable today... and especially if they're still in their original wrappings...

..so altho' I don't eat MCDonalds food, except for once in a blue moon.. I got anyone who did, and who got the free toy, to let me have it.... and so I have a collection of those toys in their original packagings in the loft...

I should really look on Ebay and see what if anything they're selling for...

About 45 years ago? I was collecting bowling trophies from my own incredibly good bowling abilities. I talked with one person when I was working for Panasonic and this gentleman had been collecting books and comic books for decades.

I didn't really ask too much in the way of questions about it but he did allude that he did have a number one Superman also a number one Spider-Man and Hulk. So you can kind of imagine how well fixed he was for retirement.
 
A better answer would be what dont I collect. I dont care for dolls or fancy glass.
Like debodun I have a whole house full. I have long list of many little collections of 10-12 items.
I have all the things listed and then some. :D

If I had to pick one thing I would say "brown" furniture. I have a whole house full.
Some late 1700's. Mostly 1800's. When I croak its all going to auction.
In the meantime. I like it. Im keeping it. I dont care if anybody else wants it. # sorry # not sorry :D

I have been slowly getting rid of the husbands collections.
Manly things like guns, knives, baseball, football, fishing, beer, cigars, pool, hunting. Mostly vintage and collectable.
For now Im keeping the pool table and small collections of things that I like.
