I don't think that "The Powers that be" care much for rail systems in the USA... which I think is a shame.
One example... California's High-Speed Rail:
Approved at $35 Billion, in 2008. It's planned operational date was to be 2020.
However, overruns (for various reasons) have increased the need to continue and complete
and the cost has risen to $128 Billion.
It's said that $13 Billion has been spent so far...

One of the benefits that holds most people is the retirement. We are under railroad retirement. Except for a year or so working in a mill when I was 18 I have never paid into Social Security.
