Have burning diaper rash

Due to the pain of my surgeries when I first arrived at this rehab I was judged non ambulatory—I was—and put in diapers in which I spent soak filled with poop for HOURS at a time. Now that I can go to the bathroom on my own I am plagued by burning rashes and sores. This was preventable. It’s agonizing. Had to initiate my own cleaning while waiting hours from burning.

I’m just so angry that this happened. I consider it elder abuse.

I’m ranting. At least I’m ranting in the right section.

So freaking mad hearing this! 🤬 It's absolutely abuse, especially if it was a pattern and not a one-time oversight. In any case, you have every right in the world to rant... no one would just take such treatment quietly. So sorry, dear Pepper... any timeline on getting out of there?

Unfortunately, nursing care has diminished exponentially these days. There is no excuse for this to have happened, Pepper. As an old time bedside nursing care provider, it begs the question as to what has happened to my profession. Doctors write the orders, do cursory checks and it's, "see ya." We are expected to heal that patient to the point where he/she can leave a facility in a reasonably healthy state.

There is a good deal of satisfaction, and self-respect when we accomplish this, but today's nurses are hell-bent on obtaining as many degrees as possible as it means more money.

More and more elder abuse cases are hitting the courts for this very reason today. This should not be. Nursing is a tough profession, but being a patient is far tougher.

From what I glean by your statement, not much in the way of rehab was going on at that facility.

So sorry, Pepper, it sounds like my worst nightmare. Document everything! My sister-in-law sued her mother's nursing home for negligence and got over a million.

I recommend Desitin ointment because it cured my baby's rash by the next diaper change.

My husband has been using Butt Paste for months and I really hate the smell, plus "for months" should tell you how effective it has been. He may have "jock itch," which is more of a fungus than a rash. He's not certain which one because he refuses to go to a doctor over this in spite of all my dire warnings about his fancy bits falling off.

Everybody's different, though, so if it worked for @hearlady's person, then it might well work for you.

Pepper, I am so sorry you have experienced this. Having recently gone through the same thing with my mother before she passed I fully understand the terrible situation you are in. My mom received fairly good care but we were there every day to advocate for her.

issues with skin breaking down happens so easily and accelerates quickly. I hope once you are home you will be better able to clear up the rash and skin deterioration. That you are up and walking is wonderful.

Keep fighting and advocating for yourself .

They do that so they're off the hook with assisting you to the toilet. Non-amb for a day or two, maybe, but they're supposed to start getting you on your feet and help you start walking asap. That's the reason you're there!

It is. Clearly.

@Pepper , I am so sorry this has happened to you. It is deplorable and it is yet another reason why I hope and pray I take my last breath somewhere on this farm. It can be in the house in the barn out in the fields, in the freezing cold or the blistering sun, just not in a nursing/rehab home somewhere.

You commented they are trying to keep you. you must have a fairly decent income coming in, elst they wouldn’t want you there. I have no doubt at all that is a legitimate worry on your part.

You have been given a lot of of great suggestions as far as creams to apply.

This is another cream you might consider. I cannot remember how husband ended up with sores on his bum, but the doctor recommended this rectIcare. It is over-the-counter but a little bit more expensive than the other items that have already been suggested. Still if nothing else works this is one more thing to consider.

hope to hear from you from your home very soon💐💐

I agree with Murrmurr concerning your personal care. If you can, lay on one side and try to leave your skin exposed as much as possible to help it breathe and heal faster. Put a towel under the area on your bed.
When using a wash cloth, try to pat your skin delicately or use a squirt bottle to wash the area.
I am so sorry that you have to deal with that. Feel better soon.
