One of my banking groups: Discontinuing PC Online Payments!

Went to make a payment of an account I nearly have paid off.
Could not find the button to "Make a Payment" So I called them.
They are shutting down the browser site next month and going either
by phone app or Call-in which charges $9.95 to a 3rd party company
for a One Time Convenience Pay.

I can not express how ticked I am. I do NOT want my financial business on
my phone and I don't trust the mail to get my bill and payment sent on time.
I surely hope others are not going to follow suit.
Just thought you all may want a heads up in case this happens to you.
I didn't even get a letter or an email of warning this was happening next month.
Imagine if I had went to make a payment next month and found a "Site can't be found"
page!

I don't blame you. There's no way I want my phone involved with my financial stuff.

I wonder what they'd do if you call in a payment.

I bank at a smaller bank. But I do have other stuff tied to other banks that are considered too big to fail. Now I'm going to be paranoid about what's going to happen in the future.

I don't like being pushed into something I don't want. I want/wish so badly I could just pay everything off and end their interest charges
they get off me. This one would be 1st!

I can't help but wonder if this has something to do with Va. getting those databases moved in there.
Databases are pretty much using the phone apps to store info with. The timing of these 2 things really makes me wonder.

is it possible it is because of the cyberattacks we are experiencing cuz of the "war" that's going on right now?

I got the rep talking and laughing and she said the complaints of getting around the website has become a nuisance
and time consuming for reps. Mostly younger people only use their phone and tablets. Since the website
gets the most complaints the board decided that really could be eliminated.
Don't think "war" has anything to do with it.
I think it comes down to $$$ and where it costs less or creates more and it could be less and less people are using the website
so why fork out the expense it has, as well as the database possibly giving them a break in cost to swing other businesses to
switch to apps over the web. That is my reasoning of it anyway. Be interesting to know though.

HB 1519 Virginia Consumer Protection Act; fees for electronic fund transfers, prohibited.

"Fees for electronic fund transfers; prohibited. Provides that charging any transaction or processing fee or similar surcharge for the purchase of a good or service through the use of an electronic fund transfer is a prohibited practice under the Virginia Consumer Protection Act.The bill also prohibits landlords subject to the Virginia Residential Landlord and Tenant Act from charging a transaction or processing fee for the payment of a security deposit, rent, or any other amounts payable."

that i can understand. some websites have terrible issues. for example the dillons grocery website we have where i am is horrible. trying to order groceries on it takes forever and it doesn't work right. apparently they're not fixing it cuz it's been like this for several years. and the app doesn't work for crap so, i have to shop with them through doordash.

I wonder how they are getting by with that fee for one time payments through a 3rd party? She repeated the options 3 times in our conversation so $9.95 stuck in my head pretty good. It was like Use the app or pay $9.95 each time. I had to use the one time pay today
with her but she waived it as I called in with a problem not just to make the payment.
Is it maybe because they give you the option either or?

Light bulb moment - I know how they are getting by with it. When I decided to have her make my
payment through her today she had to read me the conditions of the Convenience Pay option and record my
voice saying I agree. In my case when it came to the fee charge, she stated "Fee is waivered on this transaction"
So if you are desperate enough to get that payment in on time you are going to agree, aren't you? Most would.
So it's not the bank forcing you, you have the option and agreeing to the 3rd party's terms.
Does that make sense?

When we get credit, be it a credit card or other type account, the rules are spelled out in the agreement. It is not legal for the lender to institute additional charges not in the agreement.

It all depends on how much time and effort it's worth to try to get a customer service supervisor and go 'round and 'round fighting these things, or just bite the bullet, pay the extra charges going forward until the account is paid off (since you indicated in the OP it's "nearly paid off).

On the other hand, let's say Bank of America, who holds my mortgage, should try to charge me a fee to pay, I would probably go all the way fighting anything I thought was illegal because I will be paying on it for years to come. If I felt I was in the right, I would file complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the State of Texas Attorney General's office, citing the law I believed was violated.

When you made that post, I was composing my previous post #14. The phone call you're referring to seriously compromises all leverage since the recording constitutes a new agreement which may be binding going forward.

She said if I opt for this in the future it only pertains to the one time, I have to agree to each transaction, She also asked if I wanted the 3rd party to save my info in case I used it again, I said no. She also said if I opt for this again I was to use the phone number of the 3rd party not go
through the bank. So maybe I am safe on that account?

It seems you're right. Oh well, you got out of the fee this time, and I assume it's a month before another payment is due, so maybe it would remove a lot of stress to just do nothing and see what happens next time. You probably won't be the only party complaining, and things may change. [We can always hope.]

I would be equally as aggravated and angry as you, by that whole thing ,
@IrishEyes

I was recently appalled at learning that there was an extra charge to pay one of our bills, with a live phone call. Over the landline.
I was doing it to be sure they got it in time when due.

I'm afraid that more things will be going the same ways. My State is nowhere near yours.

There are lots of pressures to do everything by autowithdrawals, as well.

Fewer options.😱😖🤬

I am having them send me a new card since I don't know the full account # because long ago I cut the card up since I had no intention of using it. I will put this one on my phone and get it paid off as quick as I can and delete it. I pay enough interest I am not adding 9.95 that never goes down no matter how much you are paying. This is a reason I moved from Va. Our Property mgment of our rental was doing shady stuff like this too the last year we were there.

I had her laughing when I said... all the younger ones are using their phones probably just us older people using the website,
can't you wait till we all die off and then stop the website, it won't be that long to wait?

If you can use an app on a phone, you can probably also use one on a tablet. I do my payments online with the app on my iPad, not with my phone.
The iPad is much larger and easier for me to use, and it can have all the same apps as my phone can have.

If you have a computer/laptop that does not use apps, then you can get a tablet that you use for things that need an app. Once you have the tablet, it can connect up to your WiFi, so it won’t cost you anything extra to have a tablet, and you can use the apps for purchaes or anywhere that needs an app that you do not want to use your phone.
