Do you have to agree with an actors private life / personal views before you will watch their movies

This has come up quite a bit among my friends. I will mention that I saw a great movie with such and such and someone will pipe up and say they disagree with their lifestyle or political views, religion, etc. so they refuse to see the movie. Personally, I don't care. If I like the content of the movie and I think the actor as done a good job portraying their role, then I have no problems. How do any of us know what is really going on in their private lives? Those who do make public statements have a right to do so I guess. To me it doesn't make them any less of a good actor. I watch for the enjoyment of the movie. Where does one draw the line? If some actress always wears red shoes and you hate red, are you not going to watch them in a movie? just wondering.

I agree with you Ruth. For instance, I don't like or approve of Woody Allen's personal life choices. But, I usually love his movies and I wouldn't want to miss a good one because of something that's none of my business!

It doesn't make a difference to me, we are all flawed in some way.

I truly believe that if you think someone is normal it means that you just don't know them very well, LOL!!!

It bothers me that we live in a world where social media can destroy a person's career or ability to make a living because people disagree with the way they live, what they say, etc... It reminds me of the old Roman's giving the thumbs up or the thumbs down to a gladiator or a Christian in the Colosseum.

Well, They ARE actors of course and their personal lives or appearances really don't have anything to do with it.

Some actors I can't stand to even think about them....smug, conceited etc. but I will watch their performances.

(Like Tom Cruise for instance.) Sharon Stone is a different story.

If a vert is to be made regarding some sort of medicine; they won't hire a doctor to do it; they'll hire an actor.

Nah, that stuff about actors personal lives doesn't bother me. And I really don't know or care who is doing what with whom.
Strangely, I don't like Tom Cruise movies either. That's because it's 90 minutes of Tom Cruise on the screen. It's hard to find a scene he's not in. I don't like any movie where the lead actor's name comes before the title. It's 90 minutes of that person on the screen.
But I agree, the Scientology thing scares me too.

I wouldn't stop watching the movies of a good actor just because of their personal beliefs, like Blunderwoman I don't care for Tom Cruise once I learned about his religious or cult beliefs and how he treated his wife and daughter, but I was never a big fan before that. So no, it wouldn't stop me from watching a movie just because he was the main star, and it wouldn't draw me in to see that movie either. Just like Aunt Bea said we're all flawed in one way or another and movies are just entertainment and nothing more.

I don't go to movies but I wouldn't care that much about their personal lives. It would have to be something really bad to make me want to boycott.

Generally speaking , no.

I do not however go to any Tom Cruise movies or purchase any because he has been a poster boy for Scientology and given them huge sums of money. If you would like to know why Scientology freaks me out watch this program thoroughly -

I don't know why, but I can overlook John Travalta's affiliation with the "church" of Scientology, but Tom Cruise, I just find to be...dislikable.

I had a high school friend who was a victim of Scientology, brainwashed him and bled him dry for money.

I wouldn't pay to see a Mel Gibson movie, I dislike racists.

That's exactly how I feel... and sorry if this is not exactly the altruistic and unselfish socially acceptable answer.. I usually stop socializing with people that do not share my values.. Why would I want to do that?... I'm not mean to them or insulting to them... I simply ignore them.. I prefer to surround myself with people I respect. No apologies.

Yes and no. I guess it depends on how captivating the story is. It's not just an actor's big mouth it's their actions. I think it's Tom Sizemore who had several documented incidents of domestic abuse, drug problems so when I see him cast a cop especially sometimes it's hard to take. I'm not a big fan of Robert Downey either, people forget his drug days had him trespassing in private homes, not just getting high. Not a fan of Tom Cruise but knowing he is a scientologist doesn't seem bother me too much. Can't stand to watch a Clooney movie now a days. I rarely watch the late night comedian talk shows anymore, mostly because of time but when you know you will be lectured no way. The music stars I can't stand get turned off the minute their song comes on the radio.

In the end they are celebrities, if I want opinions I'll come here first.

I have no f'ing idea of the political leanings of Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, etc, so no, I do not care. Tom Cruise??? Pffffft.

We haven't been to a theater in some years now. All these "celebrities" are totally meaningless to us. Being an entertainer does not qualify one to claim to be an authority on government and politics.

We still enjoy old films on TCM and GetTV, and are not spoon fed a lot of political hogwash in the process.

I never go to the movies any more - hate standing in line. I wait until they come out on Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBO. I'm no longer a fan of Mel Gibson - tho I used ti be (don't like the way he treats his family - especially his daughter). I refuse to see a woody Allen movie - I have no respect for the man following his pedophillic relationship with his step-daughter. I also don't like Tom Cruise; he's a major arrogant, control freak. I don't wish to support these 3 men in any way - which includes paying to see their movies. Other than those 3, I don't much care what they do (legally) in their private lives

Sometimes... it's kind of fluid with me. Some actors turn me off for various reasons like their public behavior, political attitudes, or just being burnt out on them. Now I don't have a problem with them seeing things differently than I do, it is when they try to use their position as a public figure to do harm to what seems to me as clearly innocent folks because of their own personal bias/agenda.
