I would've thought that almost everyone's definition of a good hospital would be adequate, reasonably available medical care. Top 10 (or 50 or whatever) lists are for the bored wealthy, IMO.

The nextdoor neighbor knows someone who lives up in the hills near here and is paying $12,000/year for homeowners insurance. It's getting really hard to get homeowners insurance at all here in Calif.

Well, wish me luck: had a heck of a time finding a company to insure our home; finally found only one; they're charging us an arm and a leg; and this morning they sent an inspector out to prowl around the place. Huzz wouldn't let her inside since we've got Covid. So I googled what does that mean...

Because good ones are scarce, around here anyway. And $6K is not a small amount for most to come up with.

Huzz and I both got the Shingles vax earlier this year. I was going down this morning to get the Covid and a flu vax but tested positive for Covid this morning so too late. Huzz and I've both got Covid right now and I had strep throat last week.

I think it's about the same here, maybe a tiny bit cheaper.

Nor do I (not any first cousins anyway: Dad was an only child and Mom had just 1 brother who never married or had kids). There are more and more of us in that boat I think since people have been having fewer and fewer kids for years now.

Me too; the independent living communities around here start at about $3,500/month. I don't know if there are any low-income ones or not but there are a few that will pro-rate your rent based on your income (which can't be over a certain amount) and the waiting lists are usually about 5 yrs long.
