My parents with 5 young children in tow escaped a communist country and ventured to Macedonia, where I was born. Less than 5 years later we escaped to Greece, living there for a few years, awaiting proper documentation to enter the great United States of America. I was seven years old. None of us spoke the English language although we spoke Albanian, Macedonian and Greek. It was quite an adventure learning a new language and culture.
