Dealing with family photos, mementos, documents

Has anyone else developed a simple system of dealing with large quantities of family photos (both pre and post digital) and such. I'm overwhelmed. My son suggested I start by making an outline of my life and then go through photos and sort based on outline... well, while the idea sounds good...

What is the longest train trip you have experienced?

I’ve taken Amtrak’s Southwest Chief several times, back and forth, Hutchinson Kansas to Fullerton California, riding in coach. Beautiful scenery. The trip takes ~29 hours, unless there is a problem on the tracks or with the train.

Would you relocate for financial reasons?

I did just that. I moved, as a single, age 68, from Orange County in Southern California to the middle of Kansas at the end of 2021. I sold a single wide mobile home and bought a 3 bedroom house with full basement on half an acre, and my mortgage payment (including insurance and taxes, so PITI)...

The Burma Shave Signs By The Side Of The Road.

My brother and I really enjoyed those signs during road trips with my parents across the southwest. While living in Southern California, one of my favorite places to visit was Oak Glen, a cute, apple-growing, little town above Yucaipa. On the drive up the mountain, one of the orchards had...

Why the need to put large political signs in one's yard?

The political signs don't bother me so much as the flags... some houses have several, some huge, some rude, and so often those pricey flags are flying on houses that look like they would collapse from disrepair any day. I guess they'd rather spend their money on flags. I think they're used to...

Do you remember a sad song that brought tears?

I have a very clear memory of the first time I heard that song. It was early 60s and my dad took me on a drive in his new 1963 VW Bug. That song played on the radio. It makes me tear up to this day when I hear it, but not in a sad way.

Low vs High Deductible for Auto Ins

My auto insurance rates have gone up yet again; policy renewal is Sept 14th. My car (2018 Subaru Crosstrek) is older, I drive fewer miles, now live in a rural area, and yet, up go the premiums... I currently have $500 deductible and am considering changing to $2000. Until three years ago, I...

Do you want to live in a "seniors" only area?

There's no way I would ever live under an HOA ever again. At the senior mobile park I was in, they continually denied my choice of light aqua paint color for the minimal amount of trim, even though they couldn't provide samples of approved colors. It was clearly personal preference of the...

Do you want to live in a "seniors" only area?

I'd been living in a single wide in a senior mobile park in Orange, CA for 5 years until I bought a 3+2+full basement on half acre property here, in the middle of Kansas, 2.5 years ago and moved. I had other family (brother + wife, and son + spouse) from CA who had moved not long before. I saw...

Moving Away From Grandchild and Family

I have three kids, two in their 40s, youngest is in 30s. I've been single since the late 90s and raised my kids alone. My son lives where I do, my oldest daughter lives in Germany. When I found out that I could qualify to buy a real house, I jumped on it. I do love it where I now live. It's way...

    What have you bought recently?

Groceries are my main purchase items. I refuse to shop or buy things online, but am retired so have time to shop if I'm looking for something. I try to buy at independent shops as much as possible. I don't buy much, though, as I'm on a pretty tight budget. I don't want to hand my small bits of...

Moving Away From Grandchild and Family

I absolutely love where I moved to. It's a rural area, small town, and I feel like I've gone back in time by 50 years. People are so friendly, polite, there's no traffic or crowds... and yet a city with all amenities is within 45 min drive. It's perfect!!

Moving Away From Grandchild and Family

I lived in a senior mobile home park. I owned my single wide mobile and was able to sell it to pay for down-payment on the house where I now live, literally halfway across the country. The space rent was outrageous where I lived, and it went up.
