Do any old mysteries still stick with you?

Kyron Richard Horman

Kyron Richard Horman (born September 9, 2002) is an American boy who disappeared from Skyline Elementary School in Portland, Oregon, on June 4, 2010, after attending a science fair.[1] Local and state police, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), conducted an exhaustive search and launched a criminal investigation, but have not uncovered any significant information regarding the child's whereabouts.[2] Horman's disappearance sparked the largest criminal investigation in Oregon history. To this day, his whereabouts remain unknown.

His stepmother was considered a prime suspect, she later changed her name.

I haven't followed many of these real-life mysteries. One that comes to mind at the moment is the case of Mary Pinchot Myer. She was a descendant of a famous federal department head, and born into eastern-American socialite circles. She was a talented artist and was well educated. She had known JFK in his youth, well before his political career

Mary was part of an elite Washington, DC circle. A divorced woman, she became one of JFK's mistresses and had clearance allowing her casual entry to the White House. When Kennedy was killed, she mentioned to some of her intimates that she feared for her own life. She was shot to death in her car about a year after Kennedy's murder. Her murder was pinned on a hapless man, on the basis of flimsy evidence. Mary was known to have been a dedicated diarist, and her diary was stolen from her home soon after she died.

The Australian "Somerton Man" mystery, still intrigues me.
Somerton Man - Wikipedia

The Somerton Man was an unidentified man found on Somerton Beach, Adelaide, Australia, on December 1, 1948. After decades of mystery, researchers identified him as Carl "Charles" Webb, an electrical engineer from Melbourne. The case was notable for its cryptic clues, including a scrap of paper with the Persian phrase "Tamám shud" ("It is over") and coded messages on a book found in his possession.

It was incredibly inept. The one and only police officer even allowed a neighbor to clean the kitchen -- which was where the ransom note was found.

Then in 1999 they had the Columbine school shooting and once again, police milled around indecisively, allowing people to bleed to death. We all began to wonder about the Colorado police.
Any cop worth his salt knows the first LE officer on a crime scene’s job is to secure the crime scene by roping it off. Any evidence that is lying about can easily be compromised if others are allowed to traipse through the home.

Aside From those that gained national attention and are still in the spotlight —- the hometown killing of the McLaughlin couple in December, 1973.

My son’s paternal family were all from this small (back then) town. The killing was a chiller because they were a well liked (so we thought) older couple and I passed their very nice & neat blue collar brick home every time I went into town. At the time there was a lot of speculation and theories including possibly mob-related.

I had not thought about this for years, until I saw this thread — it was the killing I thought of immediately, so I googled to see if it had ever been solved —- sadly it has not. I am sure Somebody is still alive that knows something.

Actually I believe she was shot execution style while exercise walking in a park near to her home. There's no doubt in my mind that she was murdered to keep her from revealing what she knew about JFK, their relationship, and what she expected re his assassination. There are several good books about the murder. People in high places were involved.

Thanks for correcting that point, ChiroDoc. A few years back now, I read an article and then a book about her. I wrote my post from what I remembered, and I got that murder detail wrong. (My excuse, I'm not an aficionado of unsolved mysteries.)

WOW! Could you say more about the case?
You can probably look it up, but there was a swimming hole near my house and all the locals went to it. Kathy and her friend would go there and flirt with guys and one day got the wron guy. She was 16 and became pregnant with this monster's child.

He picked them up one day and took them to a different location, killed them both and cut them up. He cut Kathy's uterus with 3 month old inside out of her body. At some point he dumped them along side a refurbished RR track and I found them one Sunday night while walking my dog. The smell was horrific. When I ran back home I told my then HB and he refused to "let" me call the police. The girls were found the next day by a farmer working the land there.

WARNING: Do ot read the book "Devil at Genessee Gorge.....think I have the name right. It is full of lies and made up sh*t. I am still workin with the closed case unit in Rochester, I am pretty sure who did it but everyone in this case is now deceased.

Well, it's a fascinating story. The book I read years back is Mary's Mosaic (2016), by Peter Janney. It was a fascinating read, but is it true? The great Jim DeEugenio (co-writer and chief researcher for Oliver Stone's 1991 JFK film) writes a lengthy critical rebutting of Janney's novel: Peter Janney, Mary's Mosaic (Part 2)

I've been an avid, if off and on, JFK assassination buff for nearly 25 years, and have read many books about the event and the gargantuan amount of details about it. So anything touching on the subject interests me.

Good God, Dusty. What a story. I'm glad you're still working with the authorities.

One mystery that has never been solved was the murder of an elderly lady who lived around the corner from my childhood home. I knew her and her husband very well, did a lot of farm work for them when I was young but didn't keep in contact after I moved away. Her husband passed then a few years later she was murdered in her home and the house was burned down around her. Little old country wife, not a mean bone in her, probably kind of a recluse in the end since she didn't drive. Kind of remote location so not like there were bands of criminals roaming the neighborhood looking to rob houses.

I always figured the investigation got sidelined because of the Jeffery Dahmer arrest just a few weeks after the ladies murder. Dahmers childhood home which was the place of his first murder was a couple miles away and I think all the police resources got redirected there since it was such a public scandal.
