New 3 Bag Garbage Limit

Is there a size limit on the containers?
People are purchasing bigger garbage cans.

Fortunately, I live in a Court where we all combine our garbage at the curb. The City workers can't tell who put out what...so sometimes I can get away with putting out 5-6 bags every 2 weeks. Screw this unfair bylaw!

It’s getting more complicated where I live too.

The city recently switched to these 96 gallon covered garbage containers allowing one per household with a non refundable $75.00 fee to process a justification/request for additional containers.

A similar container was issued to hold recyclables and is picked up every other week.

It works for most families most of the time but it gets crazy after holidays or major family events that tend to generate significantly larger amounts of trash and recyclables. The only option is to hold that additional trash until you have room for it in subsequent weeks.

Yard waste, large item/furniture disposal is handled on special clean up days during the year. That has caused more and more trash to be dumped in vacant lots or in commercial dumpsters behind local businesses.

I’m fortunate to live in an apartment complex without limits on trash and recyclables but they have cracked down on disposal of large items.

I’m not sure how to make these things more user friendly while attempting to manage costs.

My area has those 96 gallon totes also, for weekly pickup, one for trash, one for recyclables.

Some large families found they need more but not all the time. So they got together with a neighbor (or two) and split the cost of an additional can for both (all) to use.
They are WAY too big for us, so we opted for the senior one bag plan, along with a smaller recycle tote.

Just make sure you don't put anything with your name on it in the garbage. Decades ago, my father bought me a brand new galvanized garbage can to keep in the garbage area of our co-op. One day I saw my can damaged in the middle of the street. Then it disappeared, so I started putting my garbage out in heavy duty bags. Management contacted me and told me they were going to fine me. I told them that someone damaged, then took my brand new garbage can and I wasn't buying another one. They backed off and I was not fined. But that let me know that someone had gone through my garbage and I started shredding all mail with my name on it after that.

Where I live, we get 2 large 240ltr. bins with wheels. One with a yellow lid for paper and cardboard, and the red lid for garbage, we can also get a green lid for grass cuttings and weeds. These are collected on alternate weeks. They are paid for under council rates. If I have any smelly fish to
dispose of, I save it up in the freezer then take it the next day to the shopping centre and put it in their bins. Problem solved!!

We only get our Green / recycle ( yellow ) ….and rubbish emptied once a fortnight
our recycle and green bins are 240 Ltr ..only allowed to have 140 Ltr …a rubbish bin

Never thought about trash pickup as a problem. Here Republic Services provides trash pickup & recycle every Saturday. Trash bins like this were provided free. Black top for trash Blue top for recycle. A few cents over $17.00 a month. Once a month they provide large item pickup like a water heater or mattress at no extra cost. Wheel the trash bins out to the curb, wheel them back when emptied. Electronic billing/payment is really convenient.

We recycle, compost and burn all our paper items. By the time garbage day comes we have one very small bag to put out. Then again we are a 2 person family. Our taxes pay for it.

Once a year , in May, we can put out mattresses, couches, BBQ’s, old appliances ( amost anything ) etc., for free. They just picked it up today.

Our Water/Sewage/Garbage is combined in one bill from the city each month.
My combined bill each month is $68.97 unless I use an inordinate amount of water.
Just the garbage portion of the bill is $27.43 monthly.

We get one(1) 96gallon trash bin when an account is opened.
Not sure about details, but extra bins, which are available, cost extra.
Just myself, I can easily go 2-3 weeks or longer before needing to wheel out to the curb.

Besides the garbage truck each week, there are two other city trucks each week.
One for garbage, one for piles of organic material and one for piles of mixed refuse.
About the only thing the city will not pick up is discarded tires.

The city used to do recycling but the cost to handle the recycling, cost more than the city got for the material.
So the city quit doing recycling.

I wish that, before new laws and bylaws were introduced, authorities asked:: how will this be enforced?

I won't go into details, but for every rule or law one implements, there is a set of unintended consequences. Those in authority need to think these things through.

Sadly..........

Garbage removal comes out of our Property Taxes.
Here we get an annual dump pass that is paid through property taxes. People can sign up for trash pickup with a waste mgmt company that's contracted by the county. I had a 2 yard dumpster for about 20 years, but now have 3 bins to separate trash into. At first I was doing my duty as a law abiding citizen and scrupulously deposited recyclables, garbage and yard refuse in the appropriate bins. One day I glance out the window when the trash truck came, noticed that it dumped all 3 bins in the same truck... Needless to say, no more sorting trash for nothing.

Around here we get 3 cans...1 for garbage 1 for recyclables and 1 for green waste. They get emptied every Tuesday curbside in my neighborhood. Cost is $111.65 every 2 months. This is the one bill I really dislike paying. But, luckily I have 2 green waste for the price of one since they never came and picked up the smaller one I exchanged for the bigger one. Very rarely do I have all 3 out at the same time.
