Different from self-checkouts, these utilize a different method.
You walk in, then scan a barcode that links you phone and charge card to the store. Then you gather up your groceries, and cameras throughout the store track what you put in your cart along with sensors that confirm it. Then you just walk out of the store and it bills your card. No waiting in line to check out.
You can still check out the other ways, but it's just an option.
I would assume you bring your own bags.

Anyway, it's already in operation in some stores like Amazon Fresh and a couple others.
I won't be surprised if I walk in someday and a robot will be doing checkout.

It's been available at certain stores in my area for a couple of years now. I have never tried it , mainly because I forget about the option. I have never noticed anyone else using it either. I will give it a try the next time I am at a Fry's (Kroeger) or Walmart , provided of course that I don't forget to do so.

I've seen those and they look pretty convenient. Just not for me. I don't have my whole life in my phone, plus most of the time I forget to take it with me when I leave home. I don't mind walking over to the counter and handing a cashier real money.

Undecided on this. Seems like more ways for the thieves to do their thieving. Pretend scanning is popular at self-checkout.

I put things in my cart and then organize them when checking out.
I play a little game while I shop. I memorize the price of everything I put in the cart, do the taxes and everything in my head, and see how close I get at final check out. $2.86 is close as I got so far. Beats carrying a phone and more fun. Plus good brain exercise. Been doing it for years.

we've had that here for many years... You can make a choice in all our supermarkets, you either go around normally and pay at the normal checkouts either manned or self service.....or we can scan our credit or debit cards as we enter.. and take a scanning gun with us, and as we put every item into the trolley, we scan it and bag it.. then there's a desingnated self checkout area where we get our receipts and occasional bag check...

I don't expect you to know the answers.
To often lately I've had to contest a price at check out. How would a consumer contest a price? Would there be a way to get a price adjustment from a machine?
You're right. I don't know the answer. Perhaps it would have to be settled online, and they would just credit the difference back to your card I guess.

Wow. I haven't seen that. I would imagine there are cameras as well so people didn't just put stuff in their bag without scanning it, and if it is discovered at the occasional bag check, you could just say "Woops, I thought I got that one"

Amazon Fresh already has that system. I thought it was only able to be used by Amazon card holders though. Lately I've gone to AF a few times with my Honorary Son. I never used that system though. In fact, I didn't see a device to be able to use it with. I'll have to check next time. When we get rung up, we always get the Amazon Prime card discount at the check out. I don't know if that would happen using the auto check out feature.

well yes there are cameras around the stores but no more than would be in any supermarket store... and yes that's exactly what happens at the occasional bag check.... people do still steal, they just ''forgot to scan it''... if they're found out...

They've now introduced nw self scan checkouts which weigh the trolley... and check it against the receipt...

...that's where I turn around and leave, just sounds terribly insecure and hackable.

yes there is on our machines.. you just type in the barcode number, and it will adjust the price.. if it hasn't already... and if that doesn't work there's a button to summon the assitants who walk along the checkouts waiting to help folks if they need it

I don't like the world that's being created for us where there is almost no human contact anymore. It will suit some but not others. We're being ,more and more, dehumanized all of the time. I foresee mental health issues for many.
I think we've gone past that Chic... I barely know anyone ( except me and my DD) who isn't taking some kind of meds for mental health issues... anti depressants are rife....

I don't like it.

Neither do I.

Have you heard that several retail stores are scaling back on self-checkout because of theft? Of course, not all stores are doing this. Among the ones who are: Dollar General, Walmart, Target, and Safeway. That said, some grocery stores are adding more self-checkouts. However, at others, self-checkout will be limited to only five to ten items.

I don't like self-checkout, so I won't miss it.

Afterwards then, please let us know what you thought of it. 🤓

That is, if you don't forget to tell us. 😄👍

Wegman’s had a scan as you go app. that allowed shoppers to scan items and put them into the cart as they shopped to avoid the checkout.

I found it cumbersome and annoying, Wegman’s discontinued it due to theft/fraud.

This may be the next generation.

It would be great for paid professional shoppers like the folks from instacart.

I used to do that when I was young and broke, it wasn’t a game! 😉🤭😂

That's pretty much what I do. I've caught quite a few pricing errors that way.

Anything to get rid of employees, and screw the customers too.
