Almost Got Hit by Another Car

Our country roads..and lanes used to be very quiet and as I live here, I'd often drive along our one car wide roads without seeing another car...for miles, which given that most of the roads are very bendy so it's difficult to see a car coming the opposite way.. and escpecially bad at night.

Now I rarely go through them, because for the last few years people using satnavs, get guided through them to avoid motorway traffic..they don't live here, so they dont know the rules of the country roads, and it's all become very dangerous now
Thanks, @hollydolly, for sharing your news about your small roads and people being guided to go there. I can understand it, as I have also witnessed being guided by my GPS to go down small roads. Stay safe!

Thank you for the information, @911 ! What is a dash cam, may I ask? I haven't heard of it before and might consider it. Thanks.
It's an onbard camera which usually sits on your dashboard, or can be attached anywhere you wish, and records your journey... they cost very little now. I have one, but It's not wired in so it keep falling off the dash, so I don't use it, that's a reminder for me to get the garage to put it in properly for me..

A lot of people aren’t as lucky as you were. Over my 37 years as a State Trooper, I have investigated many accidents as you described. It’s always the other person’s fault and unless you have a dash cam that shows the reality of the situation, in most instances the cop investigating the accident will advise both parties to contact their insurance company and let them battle it.

If there is a serious injury or death involved with the accident, we will do a full investigation, including a reconstruction of what happened using skid marks, the directions of the vehicles, etc. Our accident reconstructionists do excellent jobs of finding out who did what.

Having a dash cam in this environment with road rages happening almost daily is a good idea and in case of an accident, it can be used in a court of law in case of a serious accident and the case goes to trial.
In recent times both myself and DW have had close calls, I've been shopping for a dash-cam and inquiring on automotive forums.

Ok, thanks, @hollydolly . That makes sense! I will surely check into it when my son visits soon. He's more tech savvy.

Nathan: I understand why you’re checking out all the dash cams. There are a lot of cameras on the market now and it can be confusing. I would recommend writing down what you want on your camera and find the ones that fit your matrix.

My only recommendation would be to get one that is not hardwired, unless you don’t mind dropping the headliner or carpeting to run the wiring for the rear camera. My next one will be either a plug in or a battery operated cameras. High resolution (5K is recommended) and is also a good idea and at least a 128G card. Carry an extra card with you, so that in case you are involved in an accident, you can pull the card and preserve it and slip in a new card. That way, you also won’t accidentally record over it. Angle should be a minimum of 170 degrees. Front and rear are also good and so is a camera with sound, although not necessary.

There are other options you may or may not need, but it’s your choice. I would be interested to know which one you choose.
