Do You Still Use Tea Towels?

Oh wow, this makes me happy. :)

I'm going to try and get my wife off the paper towel craze. A roll might last two days here, if I'm lucky. I'm not sure of everything she does with them. :D

As for the Tea Towel v. Dish Towel thing, apologies. I try to use Americanisms whenever I post, including spellings etc, but this one passed me by. :)

You might want to consider the cost of paper towels an investment in a happy life before you begin ‘helping’ your wife manage her household expenses. 😉🤭😂

always use dish towels. I now buy microfiber hand towels and washcloths from Dollar Tree. They arre absorbent and dry fast.my problem is where to you store the towels. Have no towel rack or hooks, wooden cabinets and drawers. 🌸
Oh yes. I have several.
.

yes I use tea towels to dry dishes - have never dried dishes with paper towels or heard of anyone doing so.

I do have a roll of paper towel which I use sometimes for wiping hands on or wiping out tins before putting in recycle bin

I hang mine on the oven door handle. When we were looking at a new dishwasher, one style had a handle that I was thinking I could use to hang towels on. DH said no. Every time you would open the dishwasher, the towels would hit the floor. He illustrated it and he was right. We bought the other style.

Some of the best, most absorbent, kitchen towels were made from old Great Depression era cotton flour or feed sacks.

The fabric was also used for many other home sewing projects from diapers to dresses.

"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without"

Let's start with a definition:

"Tea towel, also known as a dish towel or kitchen towel, is a lightweight, absorbent cloth used in the kitchen for drying dishes, glassware, and other items. It can also be used for a variety of other tasks like wiping surfaces, lining trays, or covering food. Tea towels are typically made of cotton or linen, or a blend of both, and are designed for repeated use and washing."

How many of you still have tea towels?

When I first went to he US, I was shocked at how prevalent the use of paper towels were. I wondered why tea towels weren't more common. Of course, there is the argument that paper towels are more hygienic. I get it. But still.

The cost of paper towels increased by almost 14% in 2022 alone. Still, I don't think anything will convince my wife a tea towel is the answer. :D

Is this a thing of the past?
Thanks for that explanation. l never really knew what a tea towel was and seems too nice to use as a substitute for
a paper towel. Bless the person who invented paper towels.

I guess this thread earned a better explanation of my tea towel use. 🙂

I use my "everyday" dish towels for wiping hands and picking up quick spills. Like bar towels. I change these out at the end of the day. The newer Swedish cloths replaced my dish cloths, (the smaller ones for wet cleaning and wiping.) How did I live without them. They dry out so quick!
When company comes I get out the nice waffle dish towels.

I use microfiber cloths with cleaning sprays, some disinfecting, some all purpose. This would be for cleaning up the counters, kitchen table etc.

I have one nice turkish towel that hangs on the stove handle. Everyone knows not to touch that. Its only for drying dishes. No hand drying or anything else. It's always clean but I wash it when I wash the other towels.
I have one of those towels with the button to hang on the lower cabinet for the little people to dry their hands. I get it out when they come.
I have cotton sack cloth type towels for straining my yogurt and covering my bread dough.

I wash all my towels in hot water NO fabric softener. I do use some Lysol laundry sanitizer.

I use paper towels for laying in the container when I prep food. When done I let them dry and reuse them for messes and emptying the sink drainer etc. I use paper towels when needed.

And that's it!
