Remembering that on the Eleventh Minute, of the Eleventh Hour,
of the Eleventh Day, of the Eleventh Month, World War 1 ended.

We remember the those who gave their lives, for our freedom, this
day includes the fallen from all wars, since then.

Besides the Royal Family, and all the different Military representatives,
every Commonwealth Country, was represented, I often wondered, how
many countries celebrate this occasion, I know about the Anzac Day, but
we never hear of other country doing something similar, but I am sure
that they do.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

That is a verse from the poem, "The Fallen", by, Robert Laurence Binyon,
he wrote a long poem about them, but the verse I have included is the
one that is normally read at a remembrance ceremony.
For those interested, the full Poem is Here.

Mike.

November 11th was called Armistice Day in the US until the name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.

What's the story behind it being celebrated on the 9th in England, @Mike?

The Parade and the ceremony at the "Cenotaph", in London, is always
on the Sunday, nearest to the 11th of November, Tommy.

The main national observance of Remembrance Day in the UK is held on the second Sunday of November, called Remembrance Sunday. This was officially established after World War II to commemorate both World Wars and to minimise disruption to wartime production, which had led to a temporary shift during the conflict. While services and the two-minute silence are still observed at 11 a.m. on November 11th Armistice Day, the largest national ceremonies, like the one at the Cenotaph in London, are held on Remembrance Sunday.

Does the UK have something similar to our Memorial Day? Veteran’s Day is a day we honor all who have served in all branches of our Armed Forces. Memorial Day is specifically to honor those who have fallen in war.

Always very moving to see are the veterans in red greatcoats and tricorn hats on UK Remembrance Day are the Chelsea Pensioners.
The Chelsea Pensioners are former soldiers of the British Army who reside at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a retirement and nursing home for veterans in London. Their distinctive scarlet coat and tricorn hat are iconic symbols of their status and the nation's respect for their service.

My wife and I attended an evening remembrance service today. It's paticularly poignant in that my father and his younger brother, were just two years apart. My father, who was in the army, was captured at Crete and spent the rest of the war in a prison camp. His brother, whom he was very close to, was an RAF pilot, he didn't survive the war. I carry my deceased uncle's name. It's not easy to hold back the tears when you see the myriad of poppies and remember that each one represents someone who gave their life for the life of freedom that I have enjoyed.

Now that I'm retired I attend a local service every year. It wasn't always feasible while I worked but I did my best to honour two minutes of silence at 11:00 on Remembrance Day. My Grandfather was a telegraph operator in WWI and one of my Uncles, his son, was killed in France shortly after D Day in WWII. I now have my Grandfather's gold watch that the local township gave him when he got home from the war. I also have a picture of his regiment and his complete service records.
