"They were tried after posting messages and photos on social media that wrongly suggested that Ms. Macron — the wife of President Emmanuel Macron of France — was born a boy called Jean-Michel Trogneux, the name of her older brother. The seven defendants tried in person denied wrongdoing, variously saying their posts were either meant in jest or constituted legitimate debate. Only one apologized." The New York Times

I don't know what to think about this. I value freedom of speech, but part of me just loves seeing these people get called into court. There's something so sleazy about piling on a person while hiding behind an avatar.

Thoughts?

Agreed... I am absolutely for freedom of speech which we seem to have lost in the UK and Europe genrally... but it's slimy, and cowardly to attack people, and besmirch their name with lies and inuendo from behind a keyboard...

Ten people who spread 'malicious' claims France's First Lady Brigitte Macron was born a man have been found guilty of cyberbullying.
A Paris court handed the defendants suspended prison sentences of up to eight months for the 'particularly degrading and insulting' comments about Mrs Macron, who is married to French president Emmanuel Macron.
Eight men and two women, aged 41 to 65, were accused of posting 'numerous' false claims that she was born a man and linking their 24–year age gap to paedophilia.

I don't get why the prison sentences were suspended. Up to 8 months isn't very much time. I'd have given them a lot more time and made them serve it --to send a message among other things.

Freedom of speech doesn't excuse lying about someone and possibly hurting their reputation and engendering ridicule.

In the Uk they would have been jailed.... I have a suspicion that the French courts may not be all the enamoured with the Macrons.. hence the light sentences...

Why hasn't Ms. Macron sued these people for libel? Not slander because of how courts see the difference between the two:

While slander refers to defamatory statements that are made through spoken words, libel pertains to defamatory comments made in written statements or published content. This can include postings on social media platforms, articles in newspapers or magazines, and even emails or letters.

Perhaps she will now after the trial?

Wounder what the American court will do if they come to the same result.

Dont think Candace will be jailed
Yes, that whacko Candace Owens piled on and nothing happened to her. And nothing ever happened to those who called Michele Obama a man. And what about Alex Jones who called the Parkland shooting a "hoax"? Fortunately, he lost everything. It's disgusting, and it takes free speech to a new, dangerous level.

When a person is a public figure, they should develop thicker skin. I think of the many times in past where famous people had all sorts of insults rumors and not nice things said but they did NOT run to court for every tabloid issue.
it seems to me adults running to courts is like....... I will tell mommy and daddy you hurt my feelings.

I cringe when I see something on bullying, cyber or in person. My oldest
grandson tried to commit suicide when he was 23 (he is Special Needs).
This is something that just burns me personally, minor just leads to major
if they get enough laughs out it, so stop it early is my feelings.

So because some people are though she's forced to not care either? Macron could also have hit em in the face like Will Smith and then they shouldn't whine. Just toughen up. What a crazy mess. It's just bullying. It's just hitting. Just stop that stuff. Don't tolerate it. The wrong one shoots bullies.

well tbf she's only married to a public figure, she's not THE public figure, if she had been the Prime minister or President I could agree she needs a thicker skin.. but she's not ... and she shouldn't have to take this abuse !

He's a professional politician. There should be plenty of existing dirt there without going after his wife. If the spouse or family is participating in crime ok but useless gossip involving spouse or family is an issue.

Good. It’s not free speech when you bully, inflict hurt, harass or defame someone. It is a crime. Free speech has limits.

yes, exactly the point I have made in other threads - free speech has limits. or it gets taken to dangerous levels if left totally unchecked

Your (general you) opinion about a person, even if insulting - - fine - but making incorrect statements about them in a bullying way - not so.
