Anyone else sometimes have trouble keeping down what they eat?

MarkD

Keeper of the Hounds & Garden
I googled what I experienced yesterday when we went out to eat middle eastern food with my stepson. The Falafel plate I ordered was mostly salad and a variety of sauces in addition to the falafel. Shortly after beginning to eat I felt it coming back up. Not vomiting but just a persistent pressure of the little I had eaten coming back up. Definitely not the first time but always more awkward when eating out. I haven't yet talked about it with my doctor but will do so when I see her for my next check up. Meanwhile I did google search describing what I experienced and this seems like the most likely culprit.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Growing up in a big family I have always eaten pretty quickly. I'm working on changing that but when I delay eating old habits sometimes kick in.

Anyone else ever experience this?

I have suffered from this for many years..... I have to eat a bland diet... and I take Omeprazole ( Lanzoprazole) every morning ...if I didn't I would have reflux even eating a banana...

When it happens is there a burning sensation or just a pushing up (not totally having to vomit just gag sort of to get it out? Like it just
won't can't go down? This happens to me when I drink too much fluids before and during a meal or even a snack.
I have to remember not to drink 30 minutes before I eat or the food just floats up the esophagus and has to come out.
Rice of any kind will do that to me with very little liquid prior to eating it.

That can't be any fun. My wife needs to eat non-dairy yogurt with practically everything she eats to aid with swallowing. She also gets the reaction I do sometimes. There are so many ways in which getting old is not for the meek.

Just the pushing up and now that I think about it it started yesterday when I took a big drink of lemonade. Thanks for the adding to my strategic options.

@hollydolly I sure hope I don't have to forego spicy and rich foods altogether but I could come to that. I think you like to eat out too. Do you have to order simpler foods then too or do you have other solutions?

you really will have to cut out all spicy food, including onions chillies, etc... at least for a little while until your gut recovers.

I can't eat these things at all... except for maybe once in a blue moon..

Also no acids like lemon juice, limes oranges..including orange juice... ... vinegar, etc.... even strong mature cheeses...

What you have to do is eat the mildest blandest foods you can...no peppers... no dressings except for salt....and even then just a little salt...and if you're lucky you're gut will heal itself wihin a few weeks

Like Holly I've had acid reflux for many years and take an omeprazole capsule once a day -- for me it's a half hour before dinner.

Different things spark the reflux for different people. With the drug I can eat spicy food like Mexican and Itallian, but under no conditions can I have a glass of orange juice, in fact I've gradually given up all fruit. Soup with anything in it seems to confuse my swallowing mechanism so it doesn't know whether to chew the veggies or just drink the liquid. So I can have clear or cream soup -- just not tomato soup.

MarkD's sounds like mine. That glass of lemonade would have done me in.

Irish eyes I only take the tiniest sips of water with meals, none before and wait about an hour after before I have a big glass full.

I don't have acid reflux, no burning or acid in my throat. I have been checked for acid reflux and take no medications for it.
Every one is different so there can be dozens of reasons he is getting this. Asking his Doctor is the best route to go always.

Yes ^ .
My father had same situation, turned out the hiatal hernia was caused by his heart condition.
A lot of "heart attacks" that show up in the ER are actually hiatal hernia attacks. A really bad one can make you sure you're going to be meeting your Maker shortly. I know mine gives me a sharp, deep pain right under my breastbone.

I get gerd when I eat certain things too close to bedtime. The food just doesn’t sit right with me while I’m trying to sleep so I try not to eat too late at night. I’m sorry you are having to deal with this Mark. It’s really very uncomfortable. I hope you find a solution .
The kidney specialist told me years ago to make sure to drink 8-16 ounces of water right before bed to "keep the kidneys full during the night". What? I'd be up five times to pee and it would give me regurge something awful.

He actually did have a heart condition (due to a valve problem). After he had surgery, the hiatal hernia disappeared, and so did his sleep apnea.

That was certainly dumb advice on the "specialist's" part! 😮

Sometimes I AM up 5 or 6 times to pee at night . I kid you not. I’ve gotten up sometimes 9 or 10 times to pee in the middle of the night.

Yes.. when you want to sleep, you don't need interruptions for bathroom breaks.. but also you're more likely to have solid sleep if your body isn't in the process of digesting whatever you've recently consumed.
So true. I am in the habit of not drinking much during the day and therefore getting really thirsty at night so drinking a lot then. It’s really not working for me.

Sorry. I didn't mean to imply you had acid reflux or anything else. You said you had trouble with too much water and I was saying I had trouble with water, too. That was all.

I've never felt that so far. But now I'm getting eager to get this sorted with my doctor.
