My A1C went up.

It’s still normal, but a very high normal. It’s just this side of pre-diabetic according to my doc.

Which makes sense to neither of us! She was as shocked as I was, given my overall healthy lifestyle. She just wants to monitor it for now, but suggested tweaking my diet slightly, cutting back on the carbs (I don’t eat many anyway) and upping my exercise a bit.

What have you all done to bring your A1C down?

EDITED TO ADD: She also talked about lowering my stress levels. Yeah, good luck with that. 💔

Mine is high normal too. But I'm 76. They are beginning to realize that maybe they should back off on concerns about A1C for senior citizens. That it's more than likely part of the aging process.

Like you not a lot of simple carbs. I do eat more complex carbs since I rarely eat animal protein.

It's highly likely it's stress induced. Are you scheduled for a retest ? What is high of normal?

Do you own a glucose meter? They're not very expensive should you decide to make dietary changes you could find out if what you change made much of a difference at all.

The only thing I would say, if you can, don't stress about this too.

My wife is diabetic, but her A1C mostly controlled by lifestyle. When she was hospitalized last spring her glucose was often high, but still sub 200, but in a life and death situation the body is under stress coupled with being on a feeding tube which is 50% sugar it wasn't surprising. At the time it was the least of her problems. She's back to close to normal A1C now.

Best to you and your family.

@Flarbalard thanks for this. I just ordered a glucose monitor from Amazon. Should be here today.

I have my yearly with my Doc in May. My BP’s running higher too, I forgot to mention that.

The stress just keeps mounting. My husband’s cancer, then finding out my step-daughter’s cancer has returned, then stressing about how that’s affecting Ron emotionally while he battles his own cancer diagnosis, plus him going back to work to cover for his daughter so she co tiniest to have an income.

I’m stressing about all that, plus my own concerns about whether or not I’m pre-diabetic, and what’s up with my BP and on top of all that I’m stressing about the fact that I’m stressed! 🤦‍♀️ Which of course just makes everything worse!!

Ronni, I wish there were words that could lift all that stress from you even if it's for just a short while. Sadly, there isn't.

Talk to your PC if you've got a really good working relationship with him/her. I did that with mine years and years ago, turns out I was depressed having experienced loss after loss after loss with no time to grieve in between each loss.

Editing to add: And don't take Ron with you.

@Ronni stress can affect A1C. I think that's why mine is all over the place from one blood test to the next. Stress can cause an awful lot of health issues. Especially when you are under stress for long periods of time. If you can find a way to relieve the stress or at least reduce it I'm sure your A1C would likely settle down some.
